Magic Street really surprised me. I am an avid fan of Orson Scott Card—especially his Ender series. But after reading few chapters into this book, I found myself looking for a Stephen King credit on the cover. A shear departure from his usual science fiction roots, Card takes us into a fantasy story reminiscent of King's The Talisman. Magic Street is a story that vividly creates and explores two worlds: our world and a fantasy world known as Fairy Land. Though both worlds are very different, they are utterly tied to one another. The book starts out with the birth of a child. In any normal story this would be a beautiful beginning. But there is little beauty in this birth. It is a messy, unnatural affair. The mother, who was not pregnant, suddenly finds herself in the throws of labor. Her husband tries to help and comfort her as the child is born apparently dead. A hobo, who appears to have everyone under his spell, takes the baby, places it in a plastic grocery bag, and leaves. The hobo magically removes the memory of the birth from the mother, but cruelly keeps the husbands memory intact. An odd beginning to a wonderfully odd book, so much in is not what it seems—including the baby, who is not dead, and the hobo. I liked this book. It's a good read. I didn't get as attached to the characters as I did for the Ender books, but the Ender books are special. Fans of Stephen King will definitely like Magic Street, as will I think fans of Orson Scott Card.Read full review
I was a bit apprehensive as I started this book, but soon found myself immersed in the rich characterization. Card melds the supernatural, theological, and everyday is such a seemles way. The story is about Mack Street, a boy discarded in a drainpipe inside a shopping bag. It soon becomes obvious that Mack is no ordinary boy. But can he bring together an entire neighborhood to battle evil even he doesn't completely understand? Read the book to find out more!
