I came across Gary Clark Jr. on YouTube and always thought of him as a bluesman, but a modern bluesman with a lot of rock going on as well. I'd never bothered to buy any of his music because I wasn't sure how I'd get on with listening to a whole album (even though I could see that he is an amazing guitarist). I recently decided to give one of his albums a go and bought Blak and Blu, not realising that it's actually quite an old album (2012). On my first listen, I found it to be not what I expected. The only track that really got me was "Next Door Neighbor Blues" which is a traditional blues song and absolutely fantastic. There was a couple of other tracks that got my feet tapping and head nodding, but I have to confess to being a bit disappointed overall. The next time I played the album, it just blew me away and I realised I'd been disappointed because I'd had preconceived expectations that had not been met. I realised that Gary's music cannot be categorized; he is so incredibly versatile. There is a bit of everything on here and it is one hell of an album. I shall be looking deeper into Gary's catalogue as time goes by. I would thoroughly recommend this album to anyone who wants an intro into the work of Gary Clark Jr. Read full review
