Jan Karon designed a wonderful series of books about a place called Mitford. The stories are like a slice of ordinary life with ordinary people in a small town. The townspeople are not perfect; they have secrets and bad moments, but Karon doesn't dwell on them. If you are looking for Peyton Place, this is not the series for you. However, there is conflict and misunderstanding as well as reconciliation and love. I really enjoy all her books. I am also our church librarian, and I wanted this book in our library to replace an old copy.
Jan Karon's Mitford series is one one of the best I've ever read. I am reading it a second time. The characters are so well developed. You feel that you know them. The stories are uplifting and full of wit. They stir all manner of emotions as you become acquainted with the citizens of Mitford.

This is a great book. It is part of a series of books by Jan Karon. Each book in the series is a pure delight to read. The descriptive writing gives you an accurate idea of the characters and locations of the events. Each character becomes an old friend as you read this book. Give yourself a treat and purchase this book and any of the others in the series. You won't be disappointed and will look forward to reading the next installment in the life of Father Tim and the other characters. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading good literature.
The Mitford series, including "A Common Life", is not a cute, homespun, folksy journey of smalltown living. What author Jan Karon has written is a masterfully simple, elegant, and attractive invitation for the reader to embrace a personal and sweet relationship with Jesus Christ. This series IS amazing grace!
I've read all the books in the series, each more than once. I bought this to replace an unreturned book I lent to a friend. I consider it a privilege to introduce them to the people of Mitford! I highly recommend the entire series!

There were so many bad reviews of this book on the Internet that I almost didn't read it, which would have been a mistake. It's a very good book, not nearly as much "filler" as I had been led to believe. If you like Karon's books, you'll enjoy this one. But do try to read it in sequence, which would make it #3. She wrote it out of order in response to reader requests for details of Father Tim's and Cynthia's wedding, which occurred between books 2 and 3 and which Karon had skipped. As always, Karon delivers memorable characters and scenes in a wonderful small-town setting.
I love the Father Tim Mitford books. They all make you feel good .. wholesome reading.

I absolutely LOVED all of the Mitford series books. I am just finishing the last one and I am sorry to have no more to read. When my doctor recommended this series to occupy my time following surgery, I went directly to Ebay and was able to acquire all of the books in this collection. Every one of the books, be it hard cover or paperback, has been exactly as described in the listing and I am totally satisfied with my purchases.
The "Mitford Series" is a collection of stories about a small N.C. town.Coming from a small N.C. town,I can easily identify with the community spirit and the colorful characters Ms.Karon so carefully developed."The common Life" was the only volume I needed to complete the set which I will always treasure.Anyone wanting to see into the heart of genuine America should read this,or any one of the others in this series.
