About this product

Product Information

The 'Shirley' of the title is a woman of independent means; her friend Caroline is not. Both struggle with what a woman's role is and can be. Their male counterparts - Louis, the powerless tutor, and Robert, his cloth-manufacturing brother - also stand at odds to society's expectations. The novel is set in a period of social and political ferment, featuring class disenfranchisement, the drama of Luddite machine-breaking, and the divisive effects of the Napoleonic Wars. But Charlotte Bronte's particular strength lies in exploring the hidden psychological drama of love, loss and the quest for identity. Personal and public agitation are brought together against the dramatic backdrop of her native Yorkshire. As always, Bronte challenges convention, exploring the limitations of social justice whilst telling not one but two love stories. AUTHOR: Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855) was oldest of the three Bronte sisters to achieve fame. Her first published novel 'Jane Eyre' remains her most popular work, but her subsequent books, 'Shirley', 'Villette' and the posthumously-published 'The Professor' are all highly rated.

  • A feisty lass in mid-nineteenth century Yorkshire

Some of Charlotte Brontë's best characters are drawn from depictions of her sisters. The deceased sisters, Elizabeth and Marie, were the basis of Helen Burns. By all accounts Marie was a precociously adult child but that is perhaps because accounts of Girls were not then informed by the experience of teachers of mixed classes in Primary schools, which experience suggest that most girls mature in personality and character well in advance of Boys and I had a pupil who was almost amphibian in her ability to adjust to the adult and children's world with amazing facility and tact. The Brontë world has been seen principally through the prism of Charlotte, because she was the sole survivor of the family, [except for her father] In the account of the Biography by Mrs Gaskell ,We get glimpses ...

  • Shirley

Quite a difficult book tp get to grips with. You have to read it very carefully in order to fully understand the author's meaning of words and phrases. I will persevere with it, as the author describes the period very well, and the social history of the time when the Factory System existed and times were hard for society.
