INSULATORS, A History and Guide to North American Glass Pintype Insulators is the most comprehensive insulator collecting reference book published to date for glass pintype insulators manufactured in North America. It was published in a two volume set, 325 pages, soft-cover with a separare price guide. A very small quantity were published in hard cover for donations to local libraries. Every known glass insulator manufacturer in Canada, U.S. and Mexico has been documented. Thanks to the research contributions of many insulator collectors you will be able to read the history, patent information, production and styles of insulators produced by manufacturers such as Armstrong, Brookfield, California, Boston Bottle Works, Dominion, Hamilton Glassworks, Hemingray, Kerr, Lynchburg, and Whitall Tatum. Some of the more obscure companies are still being actively researched and less information is available about them. Very little is currently known about Mexican glass insulator manufacturers but many insulators have been collected and documented in the book. For information on glass insulators from other countries you will want to purchase the softcover book (with separate price guide) "Glass Insulators From Outside North America" by Marilyn Albers and N.R. Woodward (published privately). Threaded pintype insulators are organized by a consolidated design (CD) classification system that was developed by Mr N.R. Woodward. Numbers are assigned as new discoveries are made and they are published in this book with shadow profile scale drawings and/or black and white photos complete with dimensions along with manufacturer and user embossings. Collectors use cd numbers to identify their insulators and to aid in trading, selling and purchasing. There are also very helpful cross reference indexes detailing manufacturer style numbers and user embossings to match various cd numbers. You will also find information and classification numbers for non pintype glass insulators such as johnny balls strains, telegraph battery jar rests, salesman samples and commemoratives. Altered insulators and how to identify examples of irradiated, stained, painted and crackled are briefly mentioned. There are approximately 90 photographs of rare insulators which help identify color names assigned to glass insulators. In some instances the photograph is not the best example of a color known but instead provides a view of a rarely seen insulator. The 2 volume set was published in 1999 (the latest separate price guide in 2003) and is currently out of print but can periodically be found for sale on eBay. The authors have just published (2007) an updated version of the Price Guide and it is now available for sale. This remains the most comprehensive book published on the topic and I highly recommend it.Read full review
