You have to like Shakespeare, and it helps if you have a basic knowledge of history to get the most from this set.
You have to like Shakespeare, and it helps if you have a basic knowledge of history to get the most from this set. If you do, it is engaging, entertaining and educational. Don't forget, much of Britain watched all fifteen episodes of this on television over a period of thirty weeks. That alone says a lot for the quality and entertainment value of this series. Personally, I think it is great. Having watched it, I believe I will read more books about the period, and maybe re-read the plays. I really enjoyed it.You have to like Shakespeare, and it helps if you have a basic knowledge of history to get the most from this set. If you do, it is engaging, entertaining and educational. Shakespeare's history of the collapse of the Plantagenet dynasty (a civil war which was known as the War of the Roses)due to horrific internal hemorrhaging by contending family members fighting for the worshipped crown with its attendant miseries, is brilliantly told in this early television era produced staging of the famous bard's works. The histories are told with a small troupe and with a television budget and hardly qualifies for the spectacular ratings of more costly productions, but even with draconian means, the great poet's grand retelling of this horrible end of William the Conqueror's dynasty is truly enthralling! In 16 episodes the story unfolds beginning with Henry IV(Bolingbroke) and his usurpation of the throne and the murder of the legitimate King,Richard II. Sean Connery ... Sean Connery is excellent as Hotspur and Robert Hardy is memorable as Prince Hal(the usurper's son) as the fantastic story of the powerful rebellion of the Earl of Northumberland and the Welsh wizard, Owen Glendower against the usurper Bolingbroke, unfolds. We hear the chimes at midnight and the darkness is alive and full of the well witted mischief of Falstaff, Bardoff, and Pistol as they inspire the Prince with their hilarious antics. The whole lot is soon off to war with the rebels, but not before Falstaff recruits the wortiest crew of soldiers ever known to battle. With accolades aplenty and booty acquired, the crown is defended and soon Hal ascends the throne as Henry IV dies, comforted that his prodigal son has finally returned from scandalous friendships with the underworld characters which were the joy of his youth. Henry V is soon off to France to accomplish his claim to the throne of France through the matrilineal line. His great victory over the French at Agincourt was not only fodder for Shakespeare but historians marked it well also. His marriage to the daughter of the French King brought a tempered friendship between the kingdoms but Henry died of fever after renewed fighting at a later date and his youthful son becomes King. Shakespeare continues with the story of the boy King Henry VI and his Protector. Now begins the internecine warfare between the Houses of York and Lancaster known as the War of the Roses. The Chief player in the bloody spectacle of the War of the Roses is the Earl of Warwick who overthrows Henry and makes Edward IV King, but returns to remake Henry King. Warwick finally succumbs to death when the House of York reestablishes Edward upon the throne. Edward IV dies of despair soon after his execution of his own brother George, Duke of Clarence, who had earlier sided with Warwick to reestablish Henry VI upon the throne. Edward's brother Richard now murders Edward's two sons and becomes Richard III, King of England. The climax of Shakespeare's history comes at Bosworth Field as Richard III dies at the hand of Henry Tudor who soon ascends the throne as Henry VII and brings on the Tudor dynasty and the welcomed end of the bloody dynastic wars. There is a lot of history for Shakespeare to contend with and his telling of it is lofty as usual and the television production stays close to his narrative. Despite all the shortcomings of early television, the wonderful source of their production makes it as much a thing of the ear as it is of the eye.The desire and courage of the early filmmakers to take on such a challenge keeps the incredible story that gripped the great poet centerstage into our own less tempestuous time.

This is the cycle of history plays which covers about 100 years between Richard 2nd and Richard 3rd which also includes all of the plays of Henry 4th, 5th and 6th. Therefore there are 8 plays and 15 hours to ‘get through’ or enjoy. The cast reads like a ‘who’s who’ of British acting of the early 1960s, many of whom give sterling performances. Actors include Sean Connery, Frank Windsor, Julian Glover, Judi Dench, Robert Hardy, Robert Lang, Eileen Atkins, Patrick Garland, Tom Fleming and others. These actors take on leading roles, but consistently reappear throughout the series and excel in cameo roles. Characterisation was a great success and a hallmark of the series, although we must be more forgiving about the wooden scenes, occasional fluffed lines and unconvincing battle scenes. ... Many swordfights between small numbers of actors are necessary events that simply push the narrative forward. I can also forgive old and occasionally damaged black and white film, much of which needs to be toned down with the contrast and brightness settings. Even with the limitations caused by age, I still preferred this production to the ‘academic’ and colour BBC Shakespeare series of the whole canon made 20 years or so later. The only qualm I have is that in both series the difficult character of the young Henry 6th is not portrayed convincingly. However in this production the king in old age is much better, realistic and even enjoyable. I believe this is a ‘must’ for Shakespeare buffs and actors. But even then you must give plenty of time to enjoy the whole production otherwise you could fall into the trap of having to ‘wade through it all’. If so, you may start pretending to look at the screen as some kind of ‘duty’. So non Shakespearians – beware!

Great performances with a limited budget. Great casting, see some of British actors before they were famous. The sets & camera work are a stiff. There are a few edits to the plays that weren't necessary. Way better than the 1980's color versions.

One has to remember that this was recorded originally in 1960 when technology wasn't all that great and it was on FILM. So there are some slight lines here and there and it's not all colorized and digitized like modern copies of Gone With The Wind, but it's the way you actually saw it when you were watching it back in 1961, and so I like it. Behond the technology, the acting is wonderful and the casting is wonderful. You get to see some talent like Sean Connery and Dame Judy Dench long before they were famous; not to mention other great talent.One has to remember that this was recorded originally in 1960 when technology wasn't all that great and it was on FILM.
