Love this album from George Melly. Some of the songs are now my favourite versions of absolute classics. Puts a huge smile on my face when I listen to it!

A collection of George's material, mostly standard trad jazz numbers recorded between mid 1950's to late 1960's. A number of tracks I'd never heard before, all worth listening to, as this was before hard living had affected his voice. Well produced too, possibly digitally cleaned, but no mention of this on the CD notes. Notably missing was one of his famous live numbers - was it ever get recorded? - the In-Betweenies, about gender challenged people put to the tune of the the old Ovalteenies advert. Despite this minor disappointment a very good hour of music. BTW if anyone has or knows of a recording of In-betweenies or just the lyrics, I would appreciate you sharing your source.
Having seen George Melly live, this CD shows just why George was the best male jazz singer that this country ever produced. He sings jazz just as it should be sung, from the heart, and with fun. A simply marvellous CD.
