CotA is the first fighting game Capcom made using Marvel characters, and was very groundbreaking for its time. Of course, being the first of its kind, the gameplay reflects many shortcomings of a new style of fighting game being pioneered, and it shows the roots of many good ideas that became Capcom fighting game hallmark features. CotA was their first game to feature super jumping, dashing, air blocking, and a focus on using hyper energy bars (the precursor to Street Fighter Alpha's alpha bars and super gauges), and had the beginnings of the air combo system, used rigorously and with much more elegance in the later "Vs." series of Capcom games. This was the first in the series of Marvel fighters, its sequel being Marvel Superheroes, and CotA's characters and elements were the first to be bred with Street Fighter Alpha to form X-Men vs. Street Fighter. When playing CotA and Alpha together, you can easily find all of their individual elements in XvsSF and see how that perfect merge was possible. In fact, XvsSF borrows much heavier in game engine from CotA than the alpha series, and this explains why historically through the whole Vs. series, the Marvel characters always play better than the SF or Capcom characters: It's because the game engine is grounded in CotA, where these characters are most at home. Generally what to watch for in CotA are the spectacular effects and attention to detail in background elements and other things that push the game's feel to an extreme fantasy comic book setting, complete with backgrounds that completely change, being able to break the floors and fall to new levels of the stage, and humongous sprites for special moves and characters, including the full-screen playable Sentinel character. If you're looking for the silky smooth gameplay of later Capcom fighters like DarkStalkers or the Vs. games, sadly, you won't find it here. The action is somewhat clunky and mostly an exchange of heavy blows very unceremoniously until one player snaps. It's similar to being accustomed to fast, niche, fluid, complex modern fighting games, and then going back to the original Street Fighter II; it will feel awkward, slow, and clunky. But that doesn't make it a bad game, and as mentioned, it was a milestone in the Capcom fighting game history, as much as the original Street Fighter was. Very fun, worth a look, and the PlayStation version is even clunkier with load times and frame rates, it's a poor translation from the arcade, whereas the Saturn version is much smoother and a better arcade translation. If you are a fan of Capcom fighting games, this is a must-play game, and if possible, get your hands on the Saturn version. Otherwise, the PSX version is worth a look to say you played it.Read full review
Like the other reviewer stated, the game was all right for its time when it was released, but is no match for the newer Vs. games that were released later on. The loading time could've been better for the Saturn and I can't comment on the PS version because I didn't play it. I did play this in the arcade and I must say the game was great. The game gives you a decent amount of characters to choose from. I like Psylocke, Wolverine, Spiral, and Iceman. If Capcom were to release this again for the newer systems with enhanced graphics and loading times, I would definitely pick it up. The game is worth picking up. I purchased my first one disc only from Funcoland in 98 or 99. Enjoy.
Games like this is why this system is so good. Anyone that grew up during that era of gaming tends to believe that the PS1 and N64 were the best systems. They were in regards to 3d gaming at the time, but in 2d games the Saturn destroyed those 2 systems. Capcom Fighting games were and are great. This game won't disappoint.

This is one of Capcom's earliest attempts at bringing the Marvel comic characters into fighting games. Being made by Capcom, the game plays a lot like Street Fighter. That's not a bad thing of course, as this game is excellent. You have a decent selection of characters, including heroes like Cyclops and villains like Silver Samurai. The backgrounds for the stages are well-animated and very neat. The comic book flavor of the whole thing really shines through. This port is not arcade perfect, as it is missing some frames and can run slower than the arcade version. This was because the porting was not handled by Capcom itself, like the later Marvel games were. It is still a better port than the Playstation version, though, and it is still a great game. If you're a fighting game fan and you own a Sega Saturn, this is a great game to start your collection with.Read full review
