About this product

Product Information

Classical archaeology was born on October 22, 1738, when a Spanish military engineer had himself lowered down a well to begin the first systematic study of the astonishingly intact ruins of the Roman city oh Herculaneum, buried in the eruption of Vesuvius almost 1,700 years earlier. The excavation of the neighboring city of Pompeii followed a decade later.

  • A wonderful, fascinating set of lectures

The great courses are a collection of half hour lectures by truly the most fascinating and informative lecturers in the western world. This lecturer, professor Hale, is one of the best of the best. He is a great storyteller as well as an accomplished archeologist. You will be drawn in front the first story, er, lecture, which is about the discovery of Pompeii, and it’s subsequent excavation, and will find a devastating sense of loss when the lectures are done. This was one set of lectures I will watch many times, and give to the people I love.

  • A Must Read for Interested in Ancient History

This is one of the best courses on the Great Courses. The class starts with the beginning of archaeology where it was little more than treasure and had no established procedures for a good collection of items. A detailed explanation of the tech used in modern "digs" that was clear and detailed and very interesting. The presenter, Professor Hale" has a good presentation style and along the way gives insight on the sometimes strange characters in early archaeology. All in all, I would give Professor Hale an A+ for the course..
