  • Excellent image quality

Bought this item for landscape photography as I was attracted by the full frame high resolution sensor and for this purpose the camera is excellent giving extremely sharp images. As a bonus, the camera works well with other manufacturers lens via a suitable adapter - this has allowed me to bring my old leica R fit lenses out of retirement. On the flip side, it should be noted that this camera unlike the later mk2 version has no in body image stabilisation system so unless using sony lenses with built in stabilisation, you will have no form of stabilisation when taking hand held shots. Due to the high resolution sensor the old rule of thumb that minimum shutter speed = focal length of lens is no longer appropriate - min shutter speed of double the focal length is nearer the mark. Also this ...

  • SONY a7r: Easy to use, hard to master

Set this to Auto mode and point-and-shoot and it is a fine composition camera. Otherwise there is a learning curve; for instance, in Manual mode there is no straightforwardly easy way to set shutter exposure time. But you can wend your way over to Scene mode and pick scene-styles like a 1990'2 pocket camera: landscape night portrait, beach, that sort of thing. Why would anyone want to buy an expensive mirrorless 36mp, full-frame camera to do that with it? The manuals and user guides published by SONY read like they were written by a bored engineer who flunked basic essay writing. But in that AUTO mode, the thing never misses. Its an amazingly lightweight high-res camera. I *am* going to learn to be proficient with this thing; but with a Canon, Nikon or Minolta, that takes a few hours.. ...

  • A peerless, light-weight, small form-factor full-frame mirrorless 'DLSR' that produces stunningly detailed photos

The A7R is the smallest and lightest full-frame camera one can buy right now. Yes it uses old technology but it's 36 mega-pixel sensor and lack of anti-aliasing filter enables it to take fabulous high-definition photos. It's successors, the mark II, III and IV are all much heavier and significantly bigger and so the A7R is so much more suitable for candid photography and landscape work for which I use it. In fact, I prefer this camera to my Nikon D800 and D750 and my Sony A7II - I now have two which I use with light-weight Zeiss prime lenses when I go hiking in the UK to shoot landscapes. The only down-side is that the camera shutter is very noisy and some have said that this causes image-blurring vibration at some shutter speeds when used on a tripod, but I haven't experienced any ...
