Reviews...Kubrick's vision and idiosyncratic methods were too much for some of his crew (and the critics) to bear, yet the near-miraculous achievement has never been surpassed in its genre, and this book is a monument, both physically and in substance, to that end., Known for its spectacular publications on art, design and architecture, TASCHEN makes Stanley Kubrick proud, again... A precious collector's piece for both Kubrick fans and sci-fi enthusiasts., Much has been written about 2001: A Space Odyssey but this TASCHEN publication is the final word on Stanley Kubrick's influential masterpiece. The Making of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey is a marvel, a literary piece that's as fascinating as the film it's covering and it offers readers a splendid at look one of the greatest films of the 20th century. Breathtaking., '2001: A Space Odyssey' is the most important science fiction movie ever made. And Piers Bizony's 550-page The Making of Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey', detailing the lengthy production, is a work befitting its subject. You needn't be a sci-fi junkie to appreciate this book: You merely need to love movies. The photographs may draw you in, but Mr. Bizony's writing ties it all together. He chronicles every aspect of the production, including the movie's initially disastrous critical reception, which nearly resulted in it being pulled from theaters. Finish this and you'll feel as if you've completed an advanced course in film production., ...the most epic and impressively well-written offering, direct from the family archive, that any fan - or PhD researcher - could shake a light-sabre at..., ...one of the very best film books ever produced... In the eighteen-odd years I've been doing Books Monthly I have been privileged to read many books on some of my favourite films - in particular Star Wars and Star Trek, but also recent triumphs like Interstellar. None of them has ever had the depth and the breadth of information that Piers Bizony's work has. 2001: A Space Odyssey has stood the test of time - this book will too. A modern masterpiece of cinema history.

Taschen makes truly beautiful books and for the most part this is no exception. It has many terrific behind the scenes and production photos of the from the making of 2001.
Unfortunately the design of the book leaves a lot to be desired. It is a tall and narrow book that has many pages which fold out. Unfortunately however, on the pages that do not fold out, you are unable to look at the full image because of the binding. There are many two page spreads where the middle of the image can not be seen because the book does not open wide enough to look at the entire spread. If this book opened up flat, this wouldn’t be an issue but the binding is so right that opening it flat is impossible. So you are essentially given images from the film that are squished together with the middle missing. This is extremely disappointing. Especially as there are images you want to look at but can’t because of the design of the book. I love Taschen books but in this case they seemed to value an usual shaped book more that respecting the images inside.
Loaded with fascinating facts and behind the scenes photos.
As a long-time hardcore fan of the movie since it's release, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It takes you through each step of it's production, from Arthur C. Clarke's first concept in the original book, through the entire movie-making process, using beautiful concept artwork, and photos of the scale models and full-size sets. Interviews with Clarke, principal actors, special effects and makeup people, and production designers, enhance our understanding of how Kubrick's masterpiece came to be. I especially enjoyed seeing how the full-scale set pieces were constructed. All in all, a rare treat for any fan of Kubrick's work in general, and this move in particular.
