    Availabilty on blu ray fills a real void

    I always look at Sonny Chiba as someone filling a void left in the wake of Bruce Lee. This was a time when people hungered for martial arts films while the whole anti-hero themes were vogue in cinema. This series of films presented a level of violence not seen before from Asian film. (I recall Street Fighter gaining fame for being the first film rated X for violent content. Later on there was a distinction to videotape of the film that were uncensored.) While I never thought there was quite the same level of prowess compared to Bruce Lee, there was no denying how entertaining these films are. I recall that Walter Hill wanted to call his first film The Street Fighter but had to settle with Hard Times because Sonny Chiba beat him to the punch. The popularity of these three films is ...
