Japan in the near future and the teenagers are rebelling. In an attempt to restore order, the government orders that randomly selected school classes of teenagers will be sent to a remote island for the game of Battle Royale, where, suitably armed, they must kill or be killed until one is left alive - and failure to comply will see gamesmaster Takeshi 'Beat' Kitano kill them anyway. Kinji Fukasaku's film caused a furore when it was released in Japan but, while undeniably violent, it also looks at love, loyalties and friendships between the group, who are all tested to the extreme.
