Not bad but need work
I disassembled these to look at the ports, bowls and measure the cross sectional area. The intake throat is slightly oval at 1.75" x 1.8" the exhaust throat was approx. 1.45 both of which are on the small side. The machine work was average with a great need for a bowl blend on both sides. They have a 2 angle valve job and the 60 degree cut is huge. The ports are actually good if not on the large side but with the throats opened up should be just about right. The first and third intake ports are different sized then the other two, it is because of the pushrod pinch. Do not try to just port the holes to the same size you will punch through into the pushrod hole (whoops) instead try to take an equal amount off both sides of the port to gasket match while also making the port slightly taller. ... If you keep measuring the cross sectional area you can then match it by adding height instead of width. Exhaust valve is shrouded pretty bad intake looks pretty good. Valves have undercut stems and look to be of good quality, springs are doubled one spring and a dampener. Guides are a bronze alloy with good positive seals and have good clearance. To get the most out of these heads a good amount of throat and bowl work will need to be done, throats need opened up quite a bit and I wouldn't even install them without a good bowl blend on a very mild engine. Once a sizable amount of metal has been removed from the bowl and throats these should be very good performing heads with flat top pistons and a zero deck. I have opened the intake throats to 1.9 and exhaust to 1.53 then blended the bowls and reduced the guide size with no issues except the hardened seats are slow to grind. For the price these heads are going to be hard to beat and after a little work should perform pretty good. A few final thoughts, why not 1.76 exhaust valves? I forgot to mention you may need to enlarge your exhaust gaskets mine were a little too short and the intake was just about perfectly gasket matched to a stock 460 gasket, they are lighter than those cast iron monsters which you will appreciate. I would recommend these to a friend on a budget if they had some porting experience (so they don't ask me to do it :) Opened up I don't see a problem with 550hp+ the first limit will be the exhaust valve size once you go too much higher hp.

The valve seats need to be lapped at the least and a good port and polish and a bowl blend would go a long way to improve flow but they could be bolted directly onto your engine and would definitely be an improvement over the old cast iron monsters that came after the dove heads. For anyone on a budget I would recommend these heads. I cannot speak as to the performance life of these heads but see no reason why they shouldn't give good value.For the price these heads are a good buy.
