Director Ridley Scott's lush fantasy film stars the young Tom Cruise as Jack, a peasant who lives in an enchanted forest with his beloved Lili (Mia Sara). One day, while quietly gamboling in a glade, the pair is distracted by the appearance of trolls, minions of the evil Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry). The cloven-footed, cavern-dwelling monster, long banished to the earth's nether regions, has sent the creatures on a mission to seize the horn of a unicorn, thereby plunging the planet into a frigid darkness over which he alone will reign. Things go from bad to worse as Lili succumbs to the forces of darkness, and Jack must assemble a motley band of elves to free her from bondage and return sunlight to the earth's surface. Sumptous art direction and overwhelming special effects are once again a testament to Scott's powers of visual invention.

"Tim Curry's best role of his career!"
This is one of my favorite fantasy movies, EVER! Tim Curry gets top billing from this reviewer, he is absolutley incredible in the role of The Big D!! Love him in Rocky Horror Picture Show but I think this was the role of his career! I also come from an era where just the sound of Billy Barty's voice makes my heart warm and fuzzy and it reaches into my found memories of watching him in my grandparents's living room! Most people I talk to have never heard of this movie and Tom Cruise fans are surprised that they aren't familiar his work in the never ending battle between good and evil. I love the set work and costumes they really enhance your imagination in a day before CGI and it submerges you into their fight, journey, and ultimately their victory.This is one of my favorite fantasy movies, EVER! I wish the version was in the description, DVD was wonky also
The only reason I bought this was because it doesn't say that it's the director's cut on the front or anywhere in the description. I was looking for the theatrical version because I grew up on it and greatly prefer it. The DVD itself was also wonky - the director commentary wouldn't turn off. It took about an hour to get it to work properly, only to realize that it was the wrong version. I ended up having to rent the theatrical version thru YouTube and wasted almost $8.00 to own a version of this movie that I don't like.The only reason I bought this was because it doesn't say that it's the director's cut on the front or anywhere in the description. TOM CRUISE IN BETTER FORM
In the never ending process of getting the last VHS movies on DVD, "Legend" was one of the final ones on my list. It has been maybe ten years since I watched it, and was surpised that this was still a good movie, and doesn't show it's age that much, except Tom Cruise and Mia Sara are just teenagers. But, this was the Tom Cruise from of old that wasn't playing Tom Cruise in a movie, but came across as the actual character. Tim Curry is still amazing and his makeup is still, by today's standards, fantastic! Great fantasy story with good direction by Ridley Scott! Legend one of the better movies from 1985!
Very solid movie for those who haven't seen it or who have only caught bits and pieces up till owning it like I did. Legend was a movie I would catch clips of on television, but never catch the name of the movie. Finally, one night I seen the movie on television and got the name. The most notable actor is Tom Cruise in this flick. Legend takes you on a wild adventure, into a mystical land where Tom is fighting goblins and the devil to save pure innocence and his true love. Worth a purchase for sure. I know I won't be selling my copy, so if you do buy it. Legend: an often overlooked fantasy film
I find it telling of how good a director is, by the subtle elements hidden in the scenery of the movie. Ridley Scott is such a director. He also uses Macs. He always assembles magnificent set designers, costumers, and make up artists. The scenery in his movies are memorable and will fill your dreams from the first time you see them. Scott brought us Gladiator ... which contained incredible acting and introduced us to incredible actors. He brought us Aliens ... which was essentially a launchpad for artist HR Giger and new stylistic way of presenting modern horror. He also brought us the geek favorite ... Blade Runner ... another movie with incredible imagery. Legend I'm not a big Tom Cruise fan ... but every now and then he's in a great movie. The Mission Impossible movies are decent, ... This isn't a really scary movie. It is a little dark, but the imagery is incredible. It may be one of the best stylized films ever produced. Here is an exposition that scrolls before the movie begins ... this is the best way to give you a plot line without giving the movie away: Once, long ago, before there was such a thing as time, the world was shrouded in darkness. Then came the splendor of light, bringing life and love into the Universe, and the Lord of Darkness retreated deep into the shadows of the earth, plotting his return to power....by banishing light forever. But precious light is protected, harbored into the souls of Unicorns, the most mystical of all creatures. Unicorns are safe from the Lord of Darkness, they can only be found by the purest of mortals....Such a mortal is Jack, who lives in solitude with the animals of the forest. A beautiful girl named Lili loves Jack with all of her heart. In their innocence, they believe only goodness exists in the world. Together they will learn there can be no good without evil....No love without hate....No heaven without hell....No light without darkness. The harmony of the Universe depends upon an eternal balance. Out of the struggle to maintain this balance comes the birth of Legends. Tim Curry as Darkness (The Devil) is by far the best portrayal and visual of evil in any movie I have seen. Many of the sets were damaged in mid production due to a fire on a nearby James Bond soundstage. One of Tom Cruise first movies. His 3rd lead character role: Top Gun (1986) ... Maverick Legend (1985) .... Jack Risky Business (1983) .... Joel Goodsen * Information from IMDB.COM One movie mess up that that even the fan sites for this movie seem to skip over concerns the goblin Blix ... in one scene ... the face of Blix has a normal skin tone ... but in all other scenes, the face of Blix is green.
