About this product

Product Information

“Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth” was released for the Xbox 360 in 2005 and had a release date on PC six months later. The video game was developed by Headfirst Productions and released by Bethesda Softworks. In this game, you battle the forces of evil in 1920s New England. As you journey through your adventure, you must use your wits and maybe a little luck to solve puzzles and figure out if you have met a friend or a foe. You need detective skills worthy of Sherlock Holmes in order to sneak around, interview people, and put clues together. Mysterious unseen forces lurk around every corner, so prepare to be assaulted. When necessary, evil artifacts and 1920s weaponry easily kill the enemy. Dark Corners of the Earth is one of several video games based on the Cthulhu mythos of H.P. Lovecraft. In this Xbox classic, you play as Jack Walters, a former police officer turned private detective with a troubled past. On February 6th, 1922, you journey to the town of Innsmouth, Massachusetts, to investigate the case of a missing person. Events quickly take a turn to the horrific as the locals attempt to assassinate you and an angry mob pursues you. As the story progresses, you discover that everything that is happening is somehow connected to the cult of Dagon and Cthulhu, and it must be stopped. The Xbox edition of “Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth” incorporates a blend of several gaming elements, including adventure, detective mystery, survival horror, and first-person shooter (FPS). The display of the game is unique in many ways. Although the game has elements of an FPS, there is no heads-up display (HUD) anywhere on the screen to locate enemies, show your health, or indicate the remaining ammunition in your gun. Call of Cthulhu also includes other game mechanics such as stealth. Because of your limited ammunition, it is often necessary to sneak past your enemies rather than confront them head-on.Call of Cthulhu has some other unique game mechanics. Although you get injured, your character does not have any hit points. Instead, he takes damage to several vital regions, including the arms and legs, and these injuries hinder your progress in the game. For example, a broken leg makes you limp, and a broken arm makes it difficult to aim your weapon. There are items that you collect to heal yourself, but different wounds require different methods. This is one way that the game promotes the survival aspect and increases tension.Another innovative feature in “Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth” is sanity. Jack Walters has a history of psychiatric illness and has spent six years in Arkham Asylum. As the game progresses, Jack Walters witnesses dark and horrific details that upset him, which makes him lose his sanity. He hears hallucinations and begins talking to himself. If he observes too much horror, he becomes permanently insane or commit suicide, which will result in an immediate game-over. However, you regain sanity by seeking out sanctuaries or by killing monsters in your path. If you dare to enter the dark, otherworldly paradise that makes up Call of Cthulhu, be prepared to face some of the most macabre tones and spookiness ever released for the Xbox.

  • How Next-Gen Gaming Should Be!!!

Pros + Captures the essence of H.P. Lovecraft. + Great graphics. + You have to actually aim guns & no HUD on your screen(feels like looking through your own eyes). + Awesome chase scenes & sound effects that will test your sanity. Cons - Aiming isn't always easy. - Puzzles can be too difficult. - You die too easily at times. - No weapons until about 3 hours into the game. Comments This game is intense. Running in fear for your life to escape a twisted town has never been so fun except for 'Resident Evil 4' of course. This game has a very next-gen feel to it. It's almost like you are playing through a horror movie. The cut scenes are quite creepy as well. Verdict Must have for horror fans. Must play for anyone who is tired of the same old FPS. 4.5/5

  • Not a Twitch game, more of a thinking mans game

Sneaking around towns, looking into basements and seeing things dragged of into dark corners. I'd love to explain some of the great parts of the game but in doing so I would spoil the suspense I truely enjoyed Call of Cthulhu, there wasnt much action in the general sense of shooting things and running around, but the suspense/horror factor was great! If you like twisted horror films or a stephen king novel, then you'll probibly love this game. Graphics are average, sound is awsome with a 5.1 dolby system. This games selling point is about the story line, and the puzzles you have to solve to advance it. Honestly if your looking for a halo, or a Resident Evil type game Call of Cthulhu is not for you. If your looking for a game reminisent of the old "Alone in the Dark" games then by all ...

  • frayed ends of sanity

being an avid howard philips lovecraft fan, this game appealed to me immediately. lovecraftian concepts DEFINE the dark depths of the human mind. his influence has spanned decades, reaching mediums such as music (see doom metal bands thergothon, nyarlathotep & foetor), movies (dagon, call of cthulu, and in the mouth of madness), literature (lots of lovecraft worship out there) and now, finally, a video game! the first person mode puts you right into the game. i normally don't like 1st person that much, with the exception of doom & halo, but it's the feeling of terror it instills in you, running from enemies, hiding, jumping, creeping. you really feel like you're in the game. the fact that you can lose your sanity adds to the intensity. your vision becomes clouded, your movement mired in ...

  • Stop!!!!!!!!!!!!

The game started out OK, despite the less than exciting creepiness of the never ending load times and cut scenes. The beginning is easy enough - Then at one point you need to fall a sleep in this hotel room to follow the strangle hold story line. Up to this point you've had to ask questions & solve simple puzzles and haven't had to defend yourself which is good considering this character can only apparently duck, jump, or run while being attacked. You wake up in your LOCKED room feeling like you were drugged while 3 armed lunatics smash your door down and begin to chase you thou the hotel requiring you to follow a specific series of events which can only be discovered by being killed several or more times. Blurred vision accompanied with a feeling of running in quick sand ...

  • call of cthulhu review

Call of cthulhu is a game you should take your time on. There are hazards and perils in the game that will make you use up all your health at once. If you mess up too bad you might have to start over from the last saving point. There are times when you will get lost or stuck on,but just keep at it. The insanity effects in the game are pretty wild, especially when your vision gets blurred and enemies are after you. One thing you will notice is that there are no numbers, statistics,or icons on the screen at any point in the game. There are no crosshairs for when you have a gun, so it makes your aim a little off. Also, you will have to reload your gun after every use. All and all, this game is fun, first person horror game.
