Rare Monkeeshines worth listening to!
I originally bought this CD as this contained a number of songs that I heard on "The Monkees" television show that weren't available commercially--e.g. "All the King's Horses," the television versions of "Valleri," "Words," "I'll Be Back Up on My Feet" and a number of other songs. Being a musician as well as an admirer of the Monkees, it is not very easy to look at this CD from both sides. I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed this product and there were some pleasant surprises...should I mention them? You will hear one of them towards the end of the TV version of "Words;" one might consider it to be rather "psychedelic." I have always enjoyed the television version of "Valleri" rather than the single one...for those not familiar, this has a slower tempo but still has the harmonies. There ... There are a number of alternate versions of songs throughout this CD such as "Hold On, Girl" with a slower tempo and additional lyrics, the concert version of "Circle Sky" from the Monkees' flick "Head" and "I Wanna Be Free" as heard from the Monkees "pilot" TV episode. It is very safe for me to say that I was not disappointed, that listening to this compilation helped me to be aware of the Monkees' abilities as singers, musicians, and performers...additionally as songwriters(check out Davy Jones' co-written "Changes" with a bit of showtune vibe to it). I had always felt that the Monkees had always been among one of the most underrated bands in rock n' roll, yet they did have much competition during their time. Right now, with the tragic and untimely death of Davy Jones, it is very sad that it takes this major loss for people to halt and say, among other questions, "What kind of band were the Monkees like?" From what I understand, this product is out-of-print, but I venture a guess that Jones' death may have an affect on this, and other Monkees' recordings. By all means, if you do get a hand on this product, whether or not you admire the Monkees, buy it! It is not only Monkees' history but music history in one CD.

I LOVE THE MUSIC OF THE SIXTIES AND THE MONKEES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE GROUP . 4 VERY DIFFERENT INDVIDUALS THROWN TOGETHER FOR A TV SHOW AN ACTOR ,A SHOWMAN AND TWO MUSCIANS BECAME ONE OF THE BEST SELLING GROUPS OF ALL TIME ,AND ONE THE FEW WHO COULD COME CLOSE TO THE BEATLES. THIS CD HAS SOME DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF SOME OF THE EARLIER MONKEE RECORDINGS SUCH AS VALLERI, WORDS, I WANNA BE FREE,SEVEN OF THE TRACKS WERE WRITTEN BY MICHAEL NESMITH , AND A COUPLE WERE ONLY ON THE TV SHOW.
