About this product

Product Information

This magnificently illustrated, highly readable, and authoritative book provides a reference source to all creatures, alive and extinct. Hugely successful in hardback, this large format paperback loses none of its detail and scope. Using classification to show all the principal groups to which living creatures belong, this takes us into some of the most intriguing and intricate areas of biological philosophy and technique. The book is divided into two sections, the first being the craft and science of classification, the second being a survey of all living creatures. It is essential reading for everyone who is interested in the diversity of living things but will also appeal to readers with an interest in natural history and evolution.

  • A tour de force across nature.

This is a delightful journey through the natural world, relating the parts to the whole and stopping long enough to explain what / how / when for each of the the major groups of organisms. The illustrations are good and the "family trees" employed to make sense of things at regular intervals are well thought out. A gem of a book.
