Product Information

The last film by Leo McCarey (AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER) picks up on earlier religious themes in the director's work. It follows Father O'Banion (William Holden, THE WILD BUNCH) to a mission in 1949 China, where he is to take over the position of the elderly Father Bovard (Clifton Webb, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, TITANIC), who is retiring. Along the way, a young girl named Siu Lan (France Nuyen, THE JOY LUCK CLUB) attaches herself to him; he takes her in, but is discomfited by her flirtatious advances. Upon arrival, she takes a position as cook at the mission, but before Bovard can abandon his post, Mao's Communist takeover begins. Chung Ren (Robbie Lee), following Mao's orders, leads a group of soldiers in taking over the mission, where he rapes Sui Lan, and she becomes pregnant. But when her son is born, the brutal soldier shows signs of a change of heart.

    A brilliant film effort from Leo McCarey

    In the tradition of his 1944 Oscar winner "Going My way", director Leo McCarey once again touches on the subject of the clergy in this wonderful 1962 film release, "Satan Never Sleeps". In 1949 Catholic priests O'Banion (William Holden) and Bovard (Clifton Webb) are constantly harassed by the Communist People's Party at their remote mission outpost in China. Adding to Father O'Banion's troubles is the mission's cook, Siu Lan (France Nuyen), an attractive Chinese girl who makes no secret of her love for him. Under the leadership of Ho San (Weaver Lee), the Communists wreck the mission dispensary and desecrate the chapel. Ho San straps O'Banion to a chair and rapes Siu Lan; later, when she gives birth to a son, Ho San displays paternal pride but refuses to stop persecuting the priests. Only ...

    Satan Never Sleeps

    This is a great movie set in late 1940's China. I am fairly sure it is fictional, but the historical backdrop was flawless. Wm. Holden plays the part of a replacement priest and the priest he is replacing is a hurry to leave because the Chinese Communists were close and advancing ever closer. The Chinese Communists were no friends to Christianity then, or now. The dynamics of the character's relationships make the film very entertaining and emotionally engaging as events unfold. Priests making bold stands against tyranny using reason, showing compassion upon their enemies while being persecuted, plus some humor, and other good things, make this a good choice.
