"You Conquered The World & More... Heaven's Door"
In Chuck P's. book he points out that Styx was one of the first American bands to have 4 consecutive multi-platinum albums... This show captures the beginning of that stellar era, as they are touring behind their breakout album, "The Grand Illusion"... Everything that made Styx "grand" (unavoiodable pun) with no "illusions" is here with a few exceptions, but not critical... From the blueprint of what was to come we get "Lady" (perhaps an early signature song)...Then the sweeping, sprawling tribute to America's Bicentennial, "Sweet Madame Blue" (perhaps their best song)... Tommy's minor hit "Mademoiselle" sounds great, and "The Grand Illusion is well represented: The title track, "Fooling Yourself", JY's "Miss America" is a standout, and, of course, the "anthem" "Come Sail Away" (back story ... Sadly missing is, perhaps, Tommy's greatest tune, "Crystal Ball"... Two very overlooked songs from the canon that I wish they had performed are "This Old Man", and "Castle Walls", two sheer gems... Anyway, any Styx fan should enjoy this, and given it was a radio broadcast you get what really went down with no doctoring in the studio... A+ ENJOY!
