About this product

Product Information

A fascinating account of how the railway influenced more than a century of art in Europe and America Steam locomotives gripped the imagination when they first appeared in 19th-century Europe and America. Aboard these great machines, passengers traveled at faster speeds than ever before while watching the scenery transform itself and take on new forms. Common notions of time and space were forever changed. Through vivid illustrations and engaging texts, The Railway: Art in the Age of Steam captures both the fear and excitement of early train travel as it probes the artistic response to steam locomotion within its social setting. Featuring paintings, photography, prints, and posters, the book includes numerous masterpieces by 19th- and 20th-century artists, including J. M. W. Turner, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Charles Sheeler, and Edward Hopper. With its wide variety of themes--landscape painting, the conquest of the West, Impressionism, issues of social class, Modernism, the aesthetics of the machine, and environmental concerns--this work promises an exhilarating journey for both train and art enthusiasts and for anyone interested in one of the industrial age's defining achievements. Published in association with The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, and Walker Art Gallery, National Museums Liverpool Exhibition Schedule: Walker Art Gallery, National Museums Liverpool (April 18 - August 10, 2008) The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City (September 13, 2008 - January 18, 2009)

I bought "Slaughterhouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut (Delacorte Press, 1969) and the copy is exactly as described and shown in pictures. The book arrived in a protective bag and carefully packaged by the seller, in excellent condition, with no damages caused by the transportation service, before estimated delivery. The seller answered my additional questions quickly and added a lovely bookmark from his bookstore. I thank the seller for his good care and certainly would give him six stars out of five.

  • "The Railway" is more an art book than a train book.

Up to about the 1840s, most paintings were of serious landscapes and portraits. But in the mid-40s, the advent of a new artistic style, Realism, accompanied by phantasmagoria, coincided with the beginning of the Railway Age. This book covers some of the best art works over about a century which happen to have railroading as their subjects. This book, which is a companion to a large scale art exhibit by the same title, with its 12 x 11" format, is something of a coffee table book. But in addition to its 200-some pictures, it has much commentary about the paintings and the times represented. Many of the works in their original form are immense, perhaps 6 feet wide, and some of these are reproduced as full-page or 2-page spreads, but you still need to see the originals to fully ...

  • Beautiful images of how the railroad and technology became an American Art Form

I was at the exhibit some years ago and the book (which was the show catalogue) brings it all back. Well written and finely printed. Anyone who likes art AND trains should have this book.
