Nostalgia filled New Year hits all the right spots
A group of friends who last met at University are invited some years later to the grand country estate of one of their number, Peter (Stephen Fry in a role made for him) for a new year's house party. As the group and assorted partners gather to reminisce and catch up on the intervening years, relationships and friendships are tested, successes and regrets are brought into the open, and personal tragedies unfold. Peter, ever the perfect host, tries to keep things from boiling over - and as midnight approaches finally reveals his own deeply shocking and tragic secret to the stunned house guests. The script is by turn laugh out loud funny and achingly sad; scenes of brilliant comic timing juxtaposed real human tragedies (watch for Imelda Staunton and Hugh Lawrie's gut ... A group of friends who last met at University are invited some years later to the grand country estate of one of their number, Peter (Stephen Fry in a role made for him) for a new year's house party. Emma Thompson steals several scenes as a delightfully dotty but ultimately lonely bookseller whose crush on one of the party is surely doomed to failure. Pathos, comedy, glamour, sex and the dinner party from hell are thrown into the rich mix and the result leaves a delightful aftertaste. A stellar cast also includes Kenneth Branagh, Phyllida Law and Tony Slattery, but every role - however incidental - is well played and flawless. Plus the scenery is gorgeous, the 1980s soundtrack is excellent, and the intro - composed of news footage from the early 80s - is unmissable.
