I first heard the poetry of Sir John Betjeman in reference to sailing memories with his father on the Norfolk Broads. I then saw a Griff Rhys Jones video mentioning the same piece over a section of Vaughn Williams music, which being both a weekend sailor and stereo enthusiast, I enjoyed. About a month later my wife asked what I was going to do about the olde antique decanter carrier we had. Taking a look I noticed that this was signed " Betjeman " on the patent stamp. Why hadn't I seen this before ? I became interested in the poetry, and the descriptions of Great Britain by Betjeman. I began collecting his books, and watching his videos now restored on the internet. This PAL DVD collection is for those also interested in the man, his works, and his travels and observations in a UK of past years. He champions architecture including the various early churches of the UK. I think that watching this collection, many would enjoy hearing his actual words reading his works, and there is some of that here. I have come to appreciate buildings noted by Betjeman that I realize I have walked by, or seen many times without giving a second glance. Betjeman has a dry sense of humour that my wife and I appreciate too. His sly sarcasm regarding modern building design would make my architect uncle cringe, but I think he would actually agree in most instances. Overall, he has a very good eye and a clever way of then describing what he saw, sees, and forecasts.Read full review
A must for Betjeman lovers. A national treasure.
