Synopsis
Horatio Hornblower, only seventeen years old, gets his sea legs in this "absolutely compelling" ( San Francisco Chronicle ) first installment of C. S. Forester's classic naval adventure series. The year is 1793, the eve of the Napoleonic Wars, and Horatio Hornblower, a seventeen-year-old boy unschooled in seafaring and the ways of seamen, is ordered to board a French merchant ship and take command of crew and cargo for the glory of England. Though not an unqualified success, this first naval adventure teaches the young midshipman enough to launch him on a series of increasingly glorious exploits. This novel -- in which young Horatio gets his sea legs, proves his mettle, and shows the makings of the legend he will become -- is the first of the eleven swashbuckling Hornblower tales that are today regarded as classic adventure stories of the sea. "I recommend Forester to every literate I know." --Ernest Hemingway

Was a fair price. Packaging was poor, shipping price high for such poor packaging. Card was taped to a thin piece of cardboard with the same thickness as the card. Card came in mail badly bent and warped. I was able to straiten it back out for the most part and sleeve it for a commander deck. Couldn't be used in tournament though. I reached out to seller and I was given a "sorry about that, we'll try to do better next time".

Shipped quickly. Books arrived in great condition, as described, packaged so thoroughly they would have survived being out on the porch in a thunderstorm. I'm nostalgic for the kind of computers I grew up with and it was great to find this old clip art catalog that brings back memories. Way cheaper than amazon!!!

  • Great Adventure from an Interesting Time in History

After rewatching the A&E series on Horatio, it has been so interesting to actually read the book where so many of the series' stories was taken from. This is so well written! And very exciting! Be prepared for an adventure.

  • GREAT Read

Bought these as a late xmas gift for my Dad - he's a huge fan of the Master and Commander series. I thought this would be the next best thing. He's two books in, and loves them. Thank you again.
