Sky Crawlers moves at a pace remeniscient of a Stanley Kubrick film--the director eases us into the lives of the pilots rather slowly, revealing more of the background story later on. It is not for the fan who needs instant gratification. This is more of a cerebral film than a visceral one. It features an almost magical music soundtrack and some excellent CG animation in the flight/battle sequences. The character cel animation comes across a bit starkly two-dimensional against these terrific CG renderings. This jarring contrast seems to lessen throughout the passage of time though. The concept of corporations waging war seems futuristic, yet the aircraft have qualities that remind one of the post WWII era and are similar in some ways to those in Wings of Honneamise. I give it a "good" rating because there are anime films that are stronger in plot development, and perhaps this film, being my first anime on Blu-ray disc, biases me a bit to the sheer beauty of the format on a large projection screen, but overall, it IS a beautiful work and should be in the library of every anime fan who appreciated aviation. The extras on the Blu-ray are substantial--many hours of behind the scenes, documenting how the team from Japan visited the French air force to capture the look and feel of the film's hardware and settings, as well as the work that went into the fabulous and very realistic sound effects recording. Sonically, the film is the best surround sound I've ever heard in any anime film. It really puts you in the middle of the story. Bottom line, Sky Crawlers is a 'must-have' movie, especially if you like flying.Read full review
It's unfortunate that none of the Sky Crawlers novels have been released in the USA as they, while not required, would help a viewer understand the setting better. Those looking for an action packed movie look elsewhere as there the main focus here is the characters and their interactions. Luckily most of the characters are interesting, and only a few fit the archaic stereotypes. The art style and few dog fights that are in the movie are a sight to behold and really capture the sound and fury of a World War II style dog fight mixed in with over-the-top anime stylization. My only word of warning is to make sure you pay attention to the story and characters or the ending is going to disappoint and confuse you. A good movie all around and I would rate it a sold B.

I had no idea what the video was about before i bought it, but turned out to be a great movie, wonderful animations, and driven storyline that kept me watching to the end. It had some slow moments, but they were usually very powerful to later events. It would be nicer if the movie was dubbed instead of reading subtitles, otherwise it was a great movie! Highly Recommended!
