Edna Spalding finds herself alone and broke on a small farm in the midst of the Great Depression when her husband the Sheriff is killed in an accident. A wandering black man, Moses, helps her to plant cotten to try and keep her farm and her kids together. She also takes on a blind border, Mr. Will, who lost his sight in the first World War. She must endure storms and harsh labor to try and make her mortage payment on time. Sally Field was the perfect choice for the role that she plays, as are Danny Glover and John Malkovich, who is ever so believable as a blind man. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to others. If you enjoy heart-warming, touching stories, you'll definitely enjoy this one.
A movie filled with some of the greatest actors giving some of their best performances. It really makes you appreciate all of the freedoms and ease of being able to purchase just about anything one truly needs in life or simply just wants for luxury sake. This movie lives up to it's title and makes so many good points about how hard, unfair and cruel people can be (down right evil). It also shows the value of good honest people working hard to make aimple living and bringing up their children with the morals all human beings should have, and keeping an open heart for people you don't even know but in time can and do become friends with but actually become more like an extended family. Outstanding movie. Proud to own it!
I love this movie because it is such a good depiction of real life, and how people from very different backgrounds can work together for the good of all. Sally Fields does a wonderful, believalbe role. I got very "caught up" in her frustration, pain, and determination to make a terrible blow to her life work. Danny Glover was execelent also. Together, they make you want to stand up and cheer at their success. Great Entertainment for the whole family.
Honestly, I have seen the movie over these years and love it. I am an old man, grew up Alabama and feel like I lived it. However, before I could actually watch this disc, my Blue ray died. If you check my more recent purchases, you will see I have ordered another player but not received it to date.

So many good things to say about this film like it's first rate cast of actors. The children remind me of the children from "To Kill a Mockingbird" and were so dear to the story line. The part at the Church about taking Communion was dead on to when I was a child not far from where the movie takes place. It was so real, the whole movie was so real & true to life. You would have to have grown up in Texas to appreciate this but a favorite local actor Jerry Haynes or "Mr. Peppermint" to us kids who watched his children's show played the Deputy. Any boy or girl that grew up with Mr. Peppermint loved him and any film he was a part of was frosting on the cake.
