Matt Dillon - Gus Van Sant - Cult Classic
This was a film role that allowed Matt Dillon to expand his acting. He had already worked on two films with Francis Ford Coppola (The Outsiders & Rumble Fish) and produced some other stand-out teen roles (The Big Town, Rebel, Kansas, Target) but he was becoming trapped within the role of teen rebel. Gus Van Sant was another good choice of director for Dillon to work with (he would later star in Gus Van Sant's A Kiss Before Dying) for 'Drugstore Cowboy' was also a breakthrough film for the director. He won much acclaim and is now considered one of the top film directors working today. It is a film about drug abuse. It is also a road movie. Plot: 1970s. Four junkies led by Bob (Matt Dillon) travel around snatching pharmaceutical drugs in a series of break-ins. Addiction in 'Drugstore Cowboy' ... This film is a stunning sense of what it is like to be a junkie with nothing in your mind except when the next high is going to come along! Matt Dilon is a great actor and this film shows how good he is! The way Gus Van Sant directs it is senseful to the "drug" way of life. He lets you into the feeling of how a junkie can survive in the world and how their world is continuously doused in superstition.
