SEEK Thermal Compact Pro Camera
Small and compact thermal IR camera that clips onto a mobile phone. Good temperature range. Lens lets you focus on objects from near to far. Nice carry case to keep it safe when not in use. A lot cheaper than other thermal; cameras of 320x240 image resolution. Bought mine to use on a Newtonian telescope for measuring the heat from different parts of the Moon. But it has a wide range of more terrestrial applications e.g. finding where air has got into radiators or plumbing behind a wall. Great at spotting damp in buildings or heat loss on the outside of a house. Fantastic bit of kit
I was in the market for a thermal camera for engineering diagnostic purposes. Initially started off looking at FLIR handheld (gun type) models but then stumbled across the new range of USB compatible ones which connect to your phone. These offer a great value for money as the interface, display and processing is taken care of by the phone which helps to reduce cost compared to the handheld models. I was initially considering the FLIR pluggable module as it looked very smart and is a well trusted brand within the industry. However, their version has fixed focus (I need to take close up measurements). The FLIR sensor resolution is not great so you get a fuzzy image. The software compensates for by overlaying an edge detection image taken using the phone's own camera which gives the ... I was in the market for a thermal camera for engineering diagnostic purposes. The FLIR camera also features a built-in battery which has a 20 minute life. Now, compare this to the Seek product; No built-in battery to worry about, it uses power from your phone (which must therefore support OTG so check its compatible first!). Also the lens can be focused by twisting the bezel and it works brilliantly. I chose the PRO model which has a superior resolution thermal imaging sensor to the FLIR. This is what really sets it apart from the FLIR - the image quality is so much better. Check out the comparison review videos on YouTube. When buying a camera it's all about the resolution! This model is the only one in the Seek range to offer variable emissivity compensation, so the lower models are really only good for matt surfaces. The Compact Pro is absolutely tiny by the way - smaller than your thumb. However, it does come with a very nice little carry case which is shock and waterproof. When opening the box you immediately think "wow, that's not a lot of kit for the money". You must understand though that the sensor technology is where most of the cost lies. These things arent cheap: a comparable handheld model from FLIR will set you back around £2,500. I'm seriously impressed with it and it performs all the jobs I need it to do. If you can afford to, I highly recommend the PRO model. Shop around for best price and you'll get one for much less than the £495 MRP.
