About this product

Product Information

'A Tale of Two Cities' (1859), Dickens' greatest historical novel, traces the private lives of a group of people caught up in the cataclysm of the French Revolution and the Terror. Dickens based his historical detail on Carlyle's great work The French Revolution and also on his own observations and investigations during numerous visits to Paris. The best story I have written was Dickens' own verdict on 'A Tale of Two Cities', and the reader is unlikely to disagree with this judgement of a story which combines historical fact with the author's unsurpassed genius for poignant tales of human suffering, self-sacrifice, and redemption. AUTHOR: When 'The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club', his first novel, was published, Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was just twenty-four. Published, like most of his books, in weekly instalments, it started him on a path to fame, wealth and international acclaim. Widely considered to be a literary genius second only to Shakespeare, Dickens' works, such as 'Great Expectations' and 'A Christmas Carol', remain as popular as ever.

Received the extremely well packaged book today, very prompt indeed. It was described as in 'very good condition', it certainly was and is, it looks new! And at the bottom of the invoice I was thanked for my purchase with this goodwill message added, 'I hope you love it'! A first class service, well done all involved.

Item delivered on time and as described. This is going to be a gift for a huge Jane Austen fan, so I won't be reading it, but it seems to have all of the content that was mentioned in the listing. It was a terrific price, too. Excellent service. Am more than happy to recommend seller. Thank you very much.

  • Famous classic: hard work.

I was a bit disappointed in this book, which Dickens apparently thought his best.I have read others I found easier to follow, such as Our Mutual Friend. There are some wonderful parts but the story is very far fetched and the relationship with the heroine is said to be loving but involves her husband not telling her many things. I expected to find out more about the French Revolution rather than just get a strong description of the Terror. I knew the main part of the ending and kept going to find out how it turned out. I am glad to have read the book but it wasn’t a pleasure.

  • PURE GENIUS

Bought this book as I have never read "The Classics". I had seen the film many years ago, but like a lot of films the book is always better.
