I've always associated Raymond Briggs with children's books, until a friend suggested I read "When The Wind Blows". I'm so pleased I acted on the advice because it truly is a book that gives one food for thought. It's illustrated in graphics with speech bubbles making it an easy read. Set in the cold war era, the plot revolves around an elderly couple living in an isolated country cottage. Neither of them are academically bright, he's happy doing jobs around the house and tending his garden, whilst his wife happily runs the household. When news of war with Russia and the imminent threat of nuclear attack raises it's ugly head, they both think it's going to be the same as WWII and don't worry too much,, telling themselves they got through the last war and they'll get through this one too. Booklets issued stating what to do in the event of attack, which are practically useless, resemble something written by Mickey Mouse, but nevertheless he tries to follow them to the letter. This book is comedy, heartbreak, chilling suspense and sheer horror all rolled into one - it's a book everyone should read.Read full review
Old cold war story about the BS the government tells people . They were frightening times that people today have no conception. Watch - enjoy the story- ignore the dated animation- think about it.

Very touching account of an old couple who naively believe the stuff upper lip of coping with ww2 will see them through nuclear war. Although it looks a bit dated due to its age, it's still a relevant issue today. A remake of this should be made for today's generation!
