Many were taken by photographers hired by both the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and its contractors, and most have never been published previously.     The book is a great comprehensive photographic history of the Pa Tpke

    The book IMAGES OF AMERICA: PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE, tells the story in text and images, of the background and construction of America's first modern, express highway, The Pennsylvania Turnpike. Built at the end of the 1930's and into 1940, the Turnpike provided the groundwork for the future of roadbuilding which was a result as a need to improve the nation's highway infrastructure following World War II. The Turnpike book consists of non-published pictures discovered from a variety of sources, including the Library of Congress, the Pennsylvania State Archives, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, and the authors' photography, of whom both were documenting the Turnpike on their own before they met in 1985. Of course, this reviewer is quite partial to this book, as it is the first he did ...

    Outstanding book. Lots of excellent pictures with well written text. Really captures the optimism that went into the building of the Pennsylvanua Turnpike, the tunnels, the cars, the restaurants. Well worth it. David Kissileff

    Great to know for hiway buffs

    Great photos and info on the turnpike. Learned alot, and I put it to use as I drive the pike. Makes you wonder just how they could build it in that short of a time..
