Excellent resource
I bought this set a few years ago. I have three sons. My sons and I have found the section of writing papers especially valuable. We love the whole world geography section because it has helped while doing research papers on specific countries. What we like is the ability to have it right in you. The maps are great too. There have been times that my sons have had to use the math sections to help them figure out how to do their Algebra or Geometry problems. It helps me remember what all the terms mean, and the formulas. It was a lot of money buying it from a salesman, but a had no encyclopedia except on a CD for the computer. That is excellent too, but this I have right here. If my computer is not working, I have this info right here. We can take them from room to room, or if ... I bought this set a few years ago. The Volume Library a review by a librarian
The Volume Library is an excellent resource. I have seen this set of books before as a librarian of 15 years (old sets have been donated to the library) --it has been around for decades (updated of course). It is a very good home resource for precocious school age children (if they see it and express an interest) and I expect it would be a very good resource for home-schoolers. My son is 7 and he loves to sit down with me and we read sections together--suprisingly always at his suggestion. The volume library is well-written, well-organized, informative and profusely illustrated. The publisher, Southwestern is perhaps the last of the old time door-to-door sales operations in the book industry--which is how you would have to buy this set, unless you found a second hand copy, like on eBay. It ... The Volume Library is an excellent resource. Because of the publishers obvious overhead of maintaining a sales outfit, the set is very expensive to buy from a company salesperson. It is for that reason that I recommend buying a recent (less than 5 years old) 2nd hand copy on eBay. From time to time people buy this set from a salesperson and don't end up using it, so they sell it on eBay to recoup some of their investment which otherwise would have been lost. If you were assembling an ideal concise home ready reference library for a home schooler or precocious learner, as a professional reference librarian, I would recommend an excellent dictionary (Merriam Webster or American Heritage), an excellent thesauras (Rogets), a current almanmac (World Almanac or Info. Please/Time), a good famous quotation book (Bartlett's), a book of world records (Guinness), a excellent book on famous or notable "first" facts (H.W. Wilson), an excellent book on famous or notable "last" facts (Reference Desk Press), perhaps a set for world literature and philosophy (Harvard Classic, Masterplots, The Great Books) and an good abridged 1 to 3 volume encyclopedic set (which includes a detailed atlas)like this set (Southwestern's Volume Library) which fills in most everything else. With the Internet, gone are the days when a family needs a full encyclopedia, but kids still need to have exposure, own and use reference books to excel to their fullest potential. The Volume Library is a fine part of an ideal home ready reference collection.

Not to long ago, Heather came to our home selling these Southwestern Volume Library books for only $300. For 3 books?! Is that joke, I said? No, these are no ordinary books, she said. These books cut through all the red tape and fancy talk and give it straight up. It not only helps the student but also helps the parent to help the student with their studies. It's been 40 years since I've been in school and alot has change in the way teachers teach. Remember when it was Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, which means "pure mathematics". Now a days, it's Language Arts and Math Related Skills, which deals with more relational math...whatever that means. Basically, this library will give us the help and basic knowledge needed to learn the concept without spending hours reading page after page. ... Interestingly enough many people (I was one) think that these types of reference books are useless relics in the information age of the internet. But they are wrong. The reason is that unscripted, often nonindexed data is available in such large quantities that many people have no idea about how to access the specific information that they need. If someone uses a search-engine on the internet, even in a highly refined way, they are often likely to find thousands of web-pages on the subject. Which can make the search for relevant information over-whelming. The beauty of these books is that they provide immediate and direct access to the information often being sought. And if that information is somewhat dated or not comprehensive enough, then the internet can be used to supplement ... Worth the price
I bought "The Volume Library" by Southwestern Company about a month ago. My child is in 5th grade this year. I've been out of school for so long sometims I find I'm learning all over again when I work with her on her homework. We have referenced the "Volume Library" a dozen or so times, I'm not sure what I would do without them at this point. If my child questions anything we can always find it easily it this books.I bought "The Volume Library" by Southwestern Company about a month ago. My child is in 5th grade this year.
