This novel has been made into a film. The title, "Fingersmith" refers to 'pick-pocket'. "Fingersmith" is a lesbian themed story authored by Sara Waters. It was turned into a screenplay. Then it was first produced for the BBC where it aired in Spring 2005. Waters also wrote the highly acclaimed lesbian novel, "Tipping the Velvet." It too was turned into a screenplay. "Tipping the Velvet" is still a sensation & the more beloved of the two. Both are period-novels about the exploitations & sexualities of British women during the Victorian era. This story goes: Sue Trinder was orphaned as a young child when her parents died. Forced to survive by herself living on the street, she grew up amongst thieves & confidence men. No surprise that she'd learn what she lived. One day Sue is taken in by Mrs. Sucksby who wants to keep her off the streets. However, Sucksby's friend Richard Rivers is familiar with Sue's former circle and lures her into a crime scheme. His scheme is for Sue to land a job as a maid to Maud Lilly, a young woman living with her uncle. Maud is the heiress to a large family fortune when she marries. Sue's part is to act as a confidante to Maud, so that when Richard courts her, Sue will help convince Maud to marry Richard. Richard's scheme is to marry Maud, then have her sanity questioned. Then, take over Maud's inheritance when she's committed to an asylum. The plot seems brilliant, but Sue becomes close friends with Maud. When Sue's feelings for Maud go beyond friendship into a romantic relationship, she cannot go through with the plan. As Sue's feelings become more intense, she learns the situation is not as she'd been told~Read full review
