This Carry On was filmed in 1973 and is set in a fictitious rundown seaside holiday resort called Fircombe. The plot centres around a theme topical for the time. Although Beauty Queen contests had been a British institution for a couple of decades, they were by now somewhat old-fashioned and were losing public interest. Nonetheless, they were being targeted by militant feminists as being 'degrading' to womanhood. So when the rather shady Fircombe town councillor, Sidney Fiddler (Sid James), arranges a Miss Fircombe beauty contest, audiences could foresee that he will be inviting the wrath of a whole organised female movement. Also, he will be inviting trouble with Connie Philpotts (Joan Sims), a fiancee whom he has never got round to proposing to, who runs the Palace Hotel where the girl contestants will be staying. Since the girls consist of such lovelies as Hope Springs (Barbara Windsor), Dawn Brakes (Margaret Nolan), Ida Downs (Wendy Richards) and Miss Bangor (Angela Grant) we can feel assured that Councillor Fiddler (Sid James) will be spending a lot of time at the hotel. Also the mayor, Frederick Bumble (Kenneth Connor), keeps losing his trousers in public, while publicist Peter Potter (Bernard Bresslaw) is horrified when his prim and proper fiancee, Paula Perkins (Valerie Leon) wants to show her belly-button in public. Add to this Fircombe's feminist coucillor, Augusta Prodworthy's (June Whitfield) recruitment of the Mayor's downtrodden wife Mildred (Patsy Rowlands), a garment-ripping cat-fight among the bikini-clad girls in the hotel lounge while a donkey runs amok, and a transvestite scandal at the publicity rehearsal, and we can be sure that the contest will not run smoothly on the night. Altogether this comedy is still very entertaining though its choice of subject does give away its age.Read full review
The gang returns with Sidney Fiddler conning the local council into running a beauty pageant to promote their community. He's thrilled with the prospect of entertaining all the lovely young contestants, but his girlfriend has a different plan in mind. The Carry On team have co9me up with yet another hilarious scenario to base this film within. It is a rup roaring, side-splitting, tonguue in cheek comedy that the whole family will thoroughally enjoy. Highly Recommended.
i love this film its full of laughs and those famous one liners there is nothing i dislike about any of the earlier carry ons i think i have just about got all of them and watch them regular and never get bored with them.i bought the films becoz they are light and entertaining and good for a laugh
For carry on fans only, not one of the best made, too much farce not enough of a story line, one or two of the actors a bit over the top,i am sure it will not be to every ones taste.
