A Good General Overview, not as nice as the guitar version. Theses books make nice refrence material and intro to various concepts and technquies. I do strongly disagree with the previous statement of: You can find everything on the internet and it's free. Not True. While there is tons of info out there it dosen't mean it's all good advice or even written by someone who remotely knows what there doing. In short there's only 12 notes. There is really nothing new under the sun anywhere. What makes a book a good book is what is covered, how it is covered and how it is explained. That's what your buying. You don't need anyone to show you say a Major Scale. It's simply a series of WWHWWWH (whole and Half Steps) thus every diatonic mode is simply coming from the Intial Scale. It's all a matter of how that info is expressed to you and teaching you to do it for yourself. A Scale Pattern is simply a result of the previious information. Etc on down the line. What makes a book good or bad depends on the How it is expressed to you/What is expressed to you/and if they teach you how to go about doing it for yourself. Yes there is some nice info online, but unless you can tell good from bad, how would you know what is usefull and what is misconceived. So Yes a nice handy refrence guide, not a complete method book. Useful but perhaps a bit on the pricey side.Read full review
This book, Bass Guitar for Dummies by Patrick Pfeiffer is amazing. It teaches you all the dynamics of playing the bass guitar. it goes through the diferent styles such as picking and thumbing.i really use to never use my fingers to play the bass guitar because i play guitar so i brought the pick over to play guitar. now i try to use my fingers. it produces a diferent sound and not only that you can change the tempo of the music and add slaps to make it unique. it also teaches you all the scales which you can modify to make your own music.i never knew how to read music on a sheet.this book goes through it and teaches you all that you need to. peronally i dont have a need to learn how to read music cause you dont need to know to play music. im still working on learning but if i dont im not worried about it. this book gives you a run down on what you need to know. like all books and teachers....they tell you what you need to know but they cant give you the talent. practice makes perfect. for all the new and up coming players dont give up. bass is a good instrument to learn. i was bad when i first started then i got better over time. just go at it and produce your own sounds. i didnt know how to play anything...then i picked up the bass and just started trying things. friends would give me tips and so i got better. then i decided to buy this book. it helped more and now im on my way to being bigger and better. so all in all i recommend buying this book. your skills will be enhanced thus making you that much closer to being the best bassist out there.Read full review
I mostly like that I got a BRAND NEW copy W/CD for only ONE dollar(+$3.99 shipping)!! This book is an excellent resource and teaching guide for the new/intermediate bassplayer.I played bass(self-taught/hobby)10 yrs ago and wish I would have had this book! I am back into it again(...still self-taught/hobby/fun!) and am learning some of the core concepts I should have learned all those years ago.The book is great but still no substitute for a real teacher...if you are like me(poor/on a budget)it is going to be your best friend.Just in browsing the book I have learned TONS! Even if you don`t want to "get into it" that much it will be a help;as you learn how to create basslines/grooves and the fundamentals of rhythm and music.Don`t pay full price in a store or online;do a search and get the new book/cd for a song(like I did!).Very, very worth it. Thanks for reading and Merry Christmas! hos-manRead full review
This book explains everything. In plain simple english it tells you everything from postitioning your hands to playing technics. It even tells you how to tune your bass. I like the fact that it breaks it down for you and you don't go, what the hell is he talking about? It's very easy to understand. This guy taught Adam Clayton from U2 so you know he probably knows what he is talking about. This teaches you to play everything from Rock 'N Roll to New Wave. This is definatly a must for a beginner or bassists that just wants to be on top of their game. This is also great because it teaches you to even read music. I'm still blown away by this book. Over all this book is great. You will learn so much from it!
i,m a 65 yr old women, learning a musical instrument for thr first time. my husband is a talented musican. he plays acoustic guitar, harmonica, and he sings. i wanted to be able to join him. he got me started, but the book gave me the basic steps to understand what and why. in a short time i was able to accompy him with what i had learned from reading the book and practice. you can teach old dogs new tricks with the right guidelines. i recommed these books to anyone who thinks they cannot learn something new. sometime soon i will be playing along with my husband in our church. thank u
