Die Islander Eggert Olafsson und Bjarni Palsson reisten 1752 im Auftrag der danischen Krone in ihre Heimat, um die Kenntnis uber Island, dette hidindtil saa lidet, dog mangesteds urigtig bekiendte Land - dieses so wenig und vielerorts so falsch bekannte Land -, zu mehren und zu korrigieren. Der 1772 erschienene Reisebericht gilt als Meilenstein fur die Umdeutung des Islandbildes , wahrend Eggert Olafsson lange als Urahn der islandischen nationalromantischen Bewegung angesehen wurde. Die Studie untersucht, ob und warum die Reise igiennem Island die uber Jahrhunderte etablierten Islandtopoi der Lebensfeindlichkeit und Unzivilisiertheit entkraften konnte. Sie stellt weiterfuhrend die Frage, welchen Effekt diese Umdeutung, die Island durch die Landesbeschreibung erfuhr, fur das Identitatskonstrukt der Islander angesichts der zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts erwachenden nationalistischen Stroemungen hatte.
