Along Came a Spider is a must read. You will find it hard to put down and you will find it impossible not to read the nest in the series.

James Patterson started the Alex Cross series of books, now at 32 separate books, with "Along Came a Spider". Rather than get into the storyline and ruin the read for you, I would only suggest that you read it yourself. James Patterson, unlike many of his other series lines, did not share the task of authoring the Alex Cross books. This Character is his alone and well worth your time. If you enjoy fictional crime thriller books, this James Patterson book will be the first of many that you put on the top of your list of "must reads".
