    use for online security...

    This is the first upgrade I've made in decades, I will use it for my online security. The evidence points to passphrases being more secure than the common password. So I flick through the pages, and then on any random page I'll choose a word about eight characters long. I'll repeat this process three times until I have a hyphenated password, adding any numbers or special characters as required. I also have the bonus of using it as it was meant to be, the best concise dictionary there is, in my opinion.

    Up to date, but has lost out on previous editions

    I had an old edition dating to 1990 - and it was time to update. But I was very dismayed to see that 1) the italics of entries were gone totally - and as a copy-editor, that's really unhelpful. I have no idea why this happened, it makes zero sense. So we don't know whether a foreign word is to be spelled in italics or whether it has now been incorporated as a standard word - e.g. pro forma, or de facto etc., and 2) we no longer know whether verbs are transitive or intransitive! Why? That feature was, for me, essential. So basically - feels like I'm getting less for my money, a dumbed-down version.

    Excellent comprehensive and easy to use dictionary

    Bought to replace an old edition that was starting to fall to bits, this has exceeded expectations in layout, readability and content. The Concise Oxford remains the gold standard in practical comprehensive English dictionaries for me. I also prefer the physical paper dictionary - so much easier to access and to read under bright or dull light than an online one.

    It speaks for itself!

    A source of endless interest. Perhaps I'm 'nerdy' but I enjoy finding new words and looking for specific ones, and when I do that I end up looking at other words! A great time consumer. I bought this to update on my copy dating from 1967 from which so amny of today's words are missing. Words easy to find with the thumb tabs.. Clear font + emboldened text helps with finding what I want.
