Film, as well as video, often exhibits a greater sensitivity to what is to us invisible, ultraviolet light. This is most often outdoors, especially at high altitudes, where the UV-absorbing atmosphere is thinner; and over long distances, such as marine scenes. It can show up as a bluish color cast with color film, or it can cause a low-contrast haze that diminishes details, especially when viewing far-away objects, in either color or black-and-white. Ultraviolet filters absorb UV light generally without affecting light in the visible region. It is important to distinguish between UV-generated haze and that of air-borne particles, such as smog. The latter is made up of opaque matter that absorbs visible light as well as UV, and will not be appreciably removed by a UV filter.The UV Protector shields lens from dust, moisture, scratches, and breakage.

    Review of Tiffen 58MM UV Lens Protector Filter for Canon

    This filter is an optional item. It is my personal decision to use this filter on each of my Canon lenses in order to: 1. Protect the glass on my expensive lenses from dirt and contact scratches, 2. Block UV rays in order to get more pleasing photos. Remember, it is a filter! As such it is optional! Like any other filter, if you don't know what it does, you can get by without it -- or, you can educate yourself and then decide if you wish to purchase this item or not.

    Seems to work fine

    I have only used this a few times, so it is hard to know how much difference it really makes in output. That is not a slam on the product, just a reflection on the purpose of the filter. I took a photography class that strongly encouraged me to buy a UV filter, and Tiffen was a recommended brand.

    Tiffen Filter

    I always put a UV filter on all of my lenses. My #1 reason is to protect the glass on my camera lens. Better to scratch/chip a filter than a new lens. Tiffen is high quality glass and what I always buy.

    The best protection for your lense

    I have always been very protective about my lenses, after all they are just as expensive or even more than your camera. The Tiffen UV is my standard filter for all of my lenses, because of it's affordability, being lightweight and its clarity. needless to say that a filter is cheaper than most lenses.

    Great filter!

    Works great on my 58mm-filter-type Panasonic Lens(es). Nice construction...durable. Lens dust-cap fits this nicely and is secure. A bit foggy but cleaned up nicely with distilled water.
