While one thinks of of high end radios words like Collins, ARO, Hallicrafters, Drake, ect. are in my mind considered High End. Please understand Grundig is considered of a quality nature, by all means. In my mind all radios are not created equal. An individual radio can be better than another one of the same make and model. I consider this to be of average for a receiver. Like average receivers have a lot of intermodulation known as birdies. signal rejection and IF coils with tight perimeters sometimes known as short skirts are found in the better receivers. IF shift is required for getting the noise out and the signal in. When it comes to small signals this is a must. I still like Grundig as a radio. This is a reasonably quality receiver. Thank you for your understanding with this review.Read full review

I have been a Shortwave listener since 1984. My radios are 1991 Drake R8 ( Mint Condition), Alinco DX-R8T, SDRplay RSP1 ( SDR) and 3-4 portable Shortwave radios. I was wanting one of these Satellit 800 radios when they came on the market. But I started hearing about the problems they were having with the first production runs, so I decided to wait. By the time I went back to check the progress they were discontinued. So, I finally got one on eBay. Mine was made late 2003 when all the bugs, QC problems were resolved. Just a quick review. If you decide to buy one, get one from 2003 and later if possible. My experience with my Sat 800 has been very good. It's a big radio but I like that, bigger means ease of use. No cramped dual function buttons here. The reception on Shortwave is great, but I have mine hooked to a Alpha Delta DX-Ultra antenna. that is 80 feet wide and 30 feet up in the air out in my back yard. The Sync detector locks up and stays locked so it's not so cringing when listening to music on shortwave. The display is nice and big, sound is just fantastic on all bands. The overall performance, for me, is 9 out of 10. Little nitpicking stuff: On my radio, the tuning knob looks to be slightly off center. When tuning the knob looks like it's bouncing up and down just a little bit. This doesn't effect tuning or performance in any way, just a cosmetic thing. The volume control after a while gets loose with a lot of play in the shaft. I helped this feel better by putting some felt under the knob and pushing the knob back on. The volume still works fine with no problems. Other things, their is no Pre Amp, Passband or Notch filter and it doesn't have a noise blanker. Other than those little things it's been perfect. The overall performance is very good. The sensitivity, selectivity, and all other specs are good to above average. This radio in some ways feels a lot like the Drake SW8. It's radio that is defently worth considering. It's not near as good as my Drake R8, but the Drake is in a different class. BUT, the inside electronics of the Sat 800 were designed by R.L. Drake. I don't feel it was a bad purchase, that I overpaid or got ripped off, I don't feel disappointed in any way. It's a good addition to my little Shortwave listening shack and I use it on a regular basis. It's been solid.Read full review

The radio was everything as advertised. The radio was carefully packaged for the cross country trip to the West coast and made it w/o a scratch. It is fine working condition and look to forward to playing with my new toy. I have a modest short term goal of receiving radio stations within 800-1000 miles of my current location and a long term goal of having access to radio stations in different continents.
