I have used this GPS on my ATV, Snowmobile and in the Car as it is very versatile. It works in the cold down to twenty below zero and in the rain as I have multiple mounts on these different vehicles and switch it all the time. The only flaw with this model is that in will not save individual tracks so a mountain trail that i want to show as a road for a later trip, unless I load an old track log into it there is no way to pull one up from memory. I switch from Topo 2008 and Street Maps and off road mode and fastest time depending on what vehicle it is on, I dont use the boating mode as i do not own one.

Some of the menu items are difficult to locate and not always under a logical heading. I had to pick up the book for some of the more common features and in my opinion they should be a fast grab while under way. Another draw back is the dim screen. It is very hard to see in normal daylight conditions. The screen reflects background light such that you have to shade it to make stuff out. Otherwise it was a good bang for the buck. It does what it is supposed to do. I like the adjustable heading line with the mile markers. The mounting options worked well for me. It seems to use very little power.

Use this GPSMAP640 on my Cal 34 and so far it's awesome. I've read some reviews that say the screen is not bright enough, but I've had no problems with that at all. Of course in bright sunlight you have to get a little closer to it, or shade the sun a bit with your hand, but the screen is bright enough for me and I've had no issues whatsoever with this GPS. Wired it up to my Lowrance Link 8 VHF with AIS and now commercial ships show up as green triangles. I can then just touch them and get position, course, speed and all the info I need. This combo is perfect for safely crossing the busy shipping lanes off the California coast. "Route to waypoint" function is also easy to use as is he entire operating system. I barely skimmed over the manual, and I was using the GPSMAP640 the same day it arrived. Set waypoints at all my favorite anchorages on the Islands as well around some local obstacles, then I just route to them with a few clicks on the screen. Awesome GPS! Five Stars!!!Read full review

Perfect for someone who wants one unit for both car and boat. While a bit bulkier than some of the nuvi models it has the same features if you can live without bluetooth and mp3. Its chartplotting ability and endless on the water maps make it an excellent lower priced unit for on the water. Large battery puts other units to shame when away from a power source. I replaced my outdated gpsmap 188 with one of these and no regrets.
