I bought this as a hopefully better alternative to a cheap scanner I got at a local "big box" store. The Nikon CoolScan IV is able to capture much greater detail and the image is nice and sharp. Also, the Digital ICE feature does really well at removing the effects of dust and scratches from my 35mm slides. If you are looking to make really good quality of scans of your 35mm slides and film, I highly recommend this scanner.

This scanner produces amazing digital images and has the extraordinary ability to remove scratches from old slides. The results are absolutely amazing. The unit is compact and very easy to use. Only negative comment is that the scan process is a bit time consuming - having to feel slides one at a time. I'm very happy with my purchase of the machine.
plus: high 4004x2670 pix resolution, true RGB color, 12-16 bit color depth. min: 35mm slides and negs only plus plus: separate infrared channel to locate (and correct) dust, lint, scratches. but: requires special software. Use free Vuescan scanning software for best results and ease of operation. Nikon scanning software requires proof of (new) purchase. min: optical mirror accrues dust causing halo in scans, but can be cleaned by professionals. Always put unit back inside plastic bag. Scanner is good for 10+ years.

This film holder is the best thing going for film strips or poorly mounted slide film where the film has curled. The one I received is in 'like new' condition. My only complaint, as noted with many acc for Nikon equipment reviews, is that the price is ridiculous for a little plastic and metal. It was absurd when the scanners were current, but worse now that they have been discontinued for a while. So, if you need one, suck it up and pay!

Takes a bit to get used to/figure out but works really well once you get the hang of it. Crazy expensive now that Nikon no longer sells it but well worth it for those curled negatives and single frame ones.
