Enjoyable movie about a father and daughter, both attorneys, arguing a class action case against an automobile manufacturer. The father, Gene Hackman, is the lead attorney for the class of clients bringing suit against Argo Motors. It is alleged that their 1984 station wagon automobile has a serious safety flaw that was ignored and resulted in several fiery crashes causing many severe injuries and several deaths. The actuarial people looked into the problem at the time and figured that it would probably cost at least $50M to recall and repair all of the vehicles, whereas, if they just ignored it and litigated the resulting cases, it would cost less than $30M tops. Hackman's daughter, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantino, is the attorney for Argo Motors. She is an up and coming attorney for the firm ... They contend that there was never any proof that there was a problem with the vehicle, but the faulty light circuit that caused the explosions was changed on the next year's cars. There is a lot more to this story than a faulty circuit. Hackman and his daughter are both combative. She is the product of ultra liberal "ACLU/Ralph Nader" type parents who may have worked to improve product safety, but along the way, caused a $2K car to cost $20K. Her father, right or wrong, had an affair with a female partner twenty or so years earlier. His wife dealt with it, and they reconciled their relationship and went on with their lives. On the other hand, his daughter has to continually fight this war over and over. She is so obsessed with being a bit-h to him, that she can't see that, although the situation was difficult, it really wasn't any of her business. When her mother suddenly has a heart attack and dies, she again, uses this to attack her father. As both move on with the case, she speaks with an old retired scientist who had originally diagnosed and informed Argo of his findings concerning the circuit problem. Argo ignored the problem on the advice of their in-house council, who is now Mastrantino's immediate boss. When she finds the scientist's notes, she goes to him and asks why he advised them to ignore the problem. He admitted that he hadn't read the report. He gave them bad advice and then "steamrolled" the problem, hoping it would go away. She now knows that her father was right, and that she is on the wrong side of this case. The next day, the report and evidence from the notes has vanished. It is gone and destroyed. Now, to act as if this information never existed, she would be a party to destroying evidence. At the trial, the old scientist Dr. Pavel, is questioned but he is very elderly and has memory problems, and is easily confused about matters from twenty years ago. He did testify that the circuit was bad and caused explosions, but all of his research and evidence was gone. Mastrantino had earlier told her father of a possible witness to call, the actuarial person who originally calculated the ultimate cost of a recall. By law she had to do this or be a party to evidence tampering. In an unusual move, Hackman called her boss as a witness, and he perjured himself on the stand claiming no knowledge of Pavel's reports. The actuarial person testified that he had seen the reports, and by doing so, exposed the perjury. Hackman and his clients won the case with a major settlement. She finally buried her hatchet, and went to work with her father, where she should have been in the first place. Very good movie.
