As a fan of all things Titanic-related, I had to have this film. Like almost all movie versions, this one adds characters who did not exist and romances that did not happen. However, this is minimal compared to other versions. The major interaction, before the sinking, is between two real-life characters, Bruce Ismay (President of the White Star Line) and John Jabob Astor, wealthy businessman. Although it is fact that Ismay wanted the Titanic to make the crossing as fast as possible, by most accounts Ismay ignored warnings because he truly believed the Titanic was unsinkable; in this version, he is calculating to the point of evil, knowingly endangering lives and scheming to cheat on his girlfriend, all in the name of profit. John Jacob Astor is similarly portrayed as money-grubbing and doesn't care about his wife, which directly conflicts with historical accounts that portray him as a loving husband. Before the sinking, the film is mostly Ismay and Astor talking business, with one plotting to ruin the other. The German dialogue is distracting because these men are so overwhelmingly German; it's hard to imagine them as British and American. Once the ship sinks, there is almost no dialogue, and that's when this TITANIC surpasses all other versions in its scenes of wholesale panic. The decks are filled with screaming women. The ocean is choked with swimmers trying to claw their way into lifeboats. This is heart-wrenching, and more accurate than the notion that everyone died bravely and quietly or that people could make long speeches declaring their love and be clearly heard above the din. The films ends with a propaganda statement that British greed sank the Titanic, an oversimplification that is understandable considering this film was made in 1943.Read full review
The movie it’s self was good, looking at it from a historical standpoint however, we had mechanical issues with the DVD playing smoothly in our DVD player.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
It was good for its time though very fictitious because of being made by Hitler's 3rd Reich during WWII.
