    • Wide Zoom range still really sharp at long focal lengths

Tamron 18-400mm EF-S lens I've been disappointed by the performance of both Canon & Sigma small extreme telephoto zoom lenses, particularly sharpness at the long focal lenses. Then along comes this 18-400mm lens that is the exception to the rule. It autofocuses well even at 400m zoom (at F6.3) given reasonable contrast. Focus is quiet, the anti-vibration feature provides a useful damping of shake, and at F8 the images is less than about 1 pixel blurred even at this huge zoom. At wide angle there is a little exposure fall-off at the corners. Not exceptionally lightweight but perfectly well balanced with the EOS 7D - quite a heavy camera for an EF-S mount. This lens has transformed the usefulness of the 7D as a medium sized setup to for wildlife photography. Not not quite at the quality of ...

    • Good but just not quite the cigar !

It's an APS-C lens so is only any good for crop factor cameras or M4/3 if you have one. That said it is Canon specific in mount so don't try using this with an adapter on anything else - you'll be very disappointed. Primarily aimed at pairing with the R5 I'm sure it is plenty sharp and plenty fast enough but as I run Sony and use predominantly vintage glass this was not the right match for me (I instead opted for the Sony 70-350mm APS-C specific to pair with my A6500 and have been very pleased - sharp, deep colour resolution, excellent contrast and of course the ubiquitous low light effectiveness of Sony's little maestro). Just don't expect huge things in low light from this lens - its minimum aperture of f3.5 is only good for the widest end of the focus range, and even then that isn't ...

    • Great lens!

I have previously used the Tamron 16-300mm zoom - this 18-400mm lens offers greater range and is even sharper than the older one. Very impressed and will be an ideal all-purpose lens when travelling.
