Doctor Who's Carnival of fun!
This is a fun Doctor Who story that features plenty of action, mystery and adventure. Jon Pertwee excels as the Doctor and I really started to appreciate how good he actually was in the role from this story. The special effects are distinctly 1973 and I get the feeling that this story would work really well for a new, young (and demanding) modern audience if there was an option to view a version with updated effects like there is with one or two other Who DVD releases. The story is at it's best when Pertwee is on screen and although this story does not have one of the "big" bad guys in it (apart from a little teaser shot of a Cyberman) I reckon it's a must for anyone wanting to get a snapshot of the various different Doctors through the years. One or two interesting points for Who fans ... This is a fun Doctor Who story that features plenty of action, mystery and adventure. One or two interesting points for Who fans are presented here too: The Doctor's sonic screwdriver will only open electric locks and the Timelords appear to have had some form of legislative power over the cosmos having banned some machinery from being used by the populous on the grounds that it was cruel. It seems from this and other stories that the Timelords had a policy of non-intervention only when it suited them (see Genesis of the Daleks for details)! Anyway, Carnival of Monsters is a good romp across time and space and I would recommend it to anyone who can suspend their disbelief when faced with people screaming at papiermache plesiosaurs! Jon Pertwee was cool too, I'm off to buy myself a green velvet suit and long boots.

In this multi-layered variation on the usual 'danger on an alien planet' adventure, the Doctor (Jon Pertwee - always THE Doctor to me!) and Jo Grant (Katy Manning) discover that they are trapped inside an electronic zoo or 'Miniscope' containing creatures from all over the galaxy. The Miniscope itself is on a planet that has recently emerged from isolationism, where ambitious bureaucrats vye with each other for political power. Pertwee is perfect as always, handling a clever script, facing low-budget monsters and addressing bizarrely-dressed aliens with complete conviction.
