Lonesome Dove series, Vol. 5
All of the characters were astonishingly well portrayed. Moseby's character is, probably, the most subtle of all and well worth a close look. Newt Call is a bit less than I would have expected, but completely acceptable as a period character. I'd guess that there was considerably more gunplay in the series than actually occured at the time, but what is an 'action western' without it? Here in Nevada the cache of pistoleros seemed to be Pioche, but that may be because they were more notable because their language and manners were both as bad as their pistol skills. For period costume and equipage, use of tools and utensils and the other 'mundane' stuff that actually makes or breaks any historical depiction on screen, this series bears the bell away, no question. Volume 5 is entertaining on its own, but I'd recommend getting the entire series and take note of how the characters develope from two dimensional to multi-faceted, taking particular note of Moseby; this guy is the best actor I've ever seen in any series, and should have a very busy career ahead. Volume 5 is pretty good, but I found the series entire to be far, far better than it really had any right to be. I very highly recommend the series, entire.
