Although the format is now dead, there are still quite a few folk who have HD-DVDs, myself included. My Xbox 360 HD-DVD player stopped reading discs, so I opted to buy a player. I have got a bluray player, so this was just a purchase of fancy more than necessity. After research the Toshiba HD-XE1 turns out to be the top end player amongst any. It is extremely well built: weighty, full 430mm width with a very good finish. The player takes about 30 seconds to boot into a disc after loading it, and plays beautifully. There are a myriad of connections on the back covering HDMI, component and composite video. Audio allows stereo as well as 5.1 output. Speaker distances and size can be adjusted in the setting if you are connecting directly to a speaker set and not via an AV receiver. The remote control is very well built being meta cased. It has backlit buttons to make operating in the dark easier. It's a shame HD-DVD got knocked out by Blu-ray, I find the Blu-ray menus not as intuitive to use as the HD-DVD ones. It just seems a better system to use.Read full review

Best hd dvd player I owned so far. It’s built like a tank and beautiful picture. I have compared certain movies and they definetly look better than the blu ray version. I found blu ray too grainy. Remote control is great as well. It has that metalic feel finish. I collect hd dvd’s and this player is the best one to have.

The best HD DVD player and probably the best DVD upscaler ever made! Sounds fantastic as well! Shame HD DVD lost out and some WB discs have a playback problem...

The HD system lost out to bluray however this player was one of the best players money could buy ,with a great picture and sound with HD discs [ which if you shop around you can still buy at very low cost ] but also up scales normal DVD discs so you get a great all round package ,.

The player is well known on the market. Its production is discontinued.I pourchased the second one to guaranty myself.
The HD-XE1 definitely looks more substantial than the HD-E1, but not as big and bulky as many high end DVD players out there. A nice touch is the HD DVD logo etched onto the top of the casing, although if you have the player sitting underneath your TV you probably won’t see this. As with the HD-E1 the only two buttons on show are the round power switch and the eject button to the right of the disc tray. A pull down flap covers the bottom half of the fascia. This hides a set of basic playback controls along with a “Mode” switch that can be flicked between 1 and 2. The Mode switch determines whether the player outputs a high definition signal or downscales to standard definition. The switch should be left at position 2 if you’re outputting an HD signal through HDMI or component video, but if you choose to output SD through S-Video or composite, you’ll need to flight the switch to 1. I can’t for the life of me understand why anyone would buy a player like the HD-XE1 and output a downscaled image through S-Video or composite, but I guess the option is there if you happen to be insane.Read full review
Having regrets on not buying this model HD DVD player just after the death of HD DVD, i just had to buy the Toshiba HD XE1 thankfully through ebay, no matter what the cost. The player itself looks great with a solid attractive brushed metal build quality. When switched on it displays a nice blue led lighting around the power button and under the HD DVD logo. The panel consists of LAN, coaxial/optical digital audio outputs, analog audio outputs, s-video, component and HDMI outputs. The nearest to the XE1 is the HD-EP35 which is a lot easier to get hold of on ebay. DVD upscaling does wonders for your current DVD collection. The XE1 and EP35 are pretty much identical in terms of upscaling quality. Overall if you can get hold of the Toshiba HD-XE1, go for it, you wont be disappointed. Although HD DVD is dead, there are still a lot of cheap movies to be had at amazing quality video and sound. The German release of Terminator 2 (dont forget HD DVD is region free) still eats all over the Blu Ray version.Read full review
I got this player the other day, and it is a quality piece of kit. Straight out of the box it looks like it is bomb proof! And it feels it in weight too which I like as this is usually a good sign of some quality gear (Although make sure it isnt weighed down with sand or small rocks in side it lol). The player has a few bright blue neons on it just like some of the cheaper players except on this baby you can switch the big obvious one in the centre off with a dimmer switch on the remote. Which by the way is a large but decent item itself and it has one cool feature and that is that it lights up in the dark a subtle orange/yellow colour (while eating up 4 aaa batteries in the process lol). Anyway, down to the business of how it performs! I compared it with my old samsung upscaling player which was a decent enough affair for its price (around £80 new)at the time and the this Tosh HD-EX1 was definitly better on my 42 inch panasonic plasma. It gave a much more composed, smooth and detailed picture with pratically no noise to the picture with nearly any dvd movie I threw at it except of course the crap copies you get sometimes. It probably helps that this machine has lots of picture enhancing gizmos and image noise reducing tools that only the best players have and 1080p with DVD'S and 1080p/24HZ with HD-DVD, PLUS: It can output HI-DEF Audio to an older reciever! quality and enough said on this! The other quality bonues is that it plays 'HD-DVD'S' and man do they look 'better than Normal DVD'S and sound it too. I compared my copy of Transformers on DVD with the HD-DVD version and it was at least 3 times better in everything from the clear, ultra-smooth and sharp picture to the rock solid motion and vivid colours. AND WITH HD-DVD'S DEMISE THIS SHOULD BE EASY TO GET HOLD OF AT A GREAT PRICE WITH SOME GOOD MOVIES TOO! GO ON TREAT YOURSELF THIS IS TOO GOOD NOT TOO. Thanks for reading hope this helps. I like it has 5.1 connects so I can put it through my cinema surround. The picture is cool and having the ether net connect is cool to. The remote lights up, very handy when watching a film in the dark. The only issue is when switching on the player and when you put a film in it take minutes to load or work... I have no idea why but it sometime looks like the machine is broke.. you just have to to keep waiting and waiting and waiting!! but once its working its great... only plays standard DVD discs to which is annoying!
