Inside the Mind of the Ultimate Fencer
Being a fencer myself, having just finished this book, I would consider it as required-reading for anyone who is serious about competitive sports fencing, its history, or some of its greatest masters. Aldo Nadi was, no question, one of fencing's greatest. The book is actually very well written & keeps the reader at "engagement" (excuse the pun). I found it hard to put down. For a fencer, there is quite a lot of benefit to be had in these pages: mindset, training, what it takes to be a good fencer, tradition, sportsmanship, honor, dignity, etc. As for Master Nadi, like him or not, he is quite candid about his lifestyle, beliefs, & observations about many things: fencing juries of the time, Americans, politicians, Hollywood, Hollywood swordplay, his family, women, & other fencers. The book ... The book contains as much about his exploits with women as it does about fencing. Also, for those who are annoyed/offended by elitist egotists, this may be a book to avoid, as Mr. Nadi comes off that way frequently. I especially enjoyed the account of the duel he fought & won in his younger days, before he was at the pinnacle of his achievements. Riveting, that! Not all great swordsmen write books (Nadi actually wrote two, the other is a treatise called On Fencing), but when they do, a serious fencer will take note & get a copy in hand. The Living Sword, detailing the life & times of Aldo Nadi by his own hand & word, is worthy of such consideration, indeed!
