Wonderful deadpan humour in the films and the Red Army Choir concert is spectacular.

i bought this after accidentally finding The Cowboys playing a gig with the Red Army Ensemble on Youtube. The mix of cultures had a curious charm and a rare interview I found with the enigmatic director made me feel that I'd stumbled on a classic. I wasn't disappointed- The America disc wasn't just surreally amusing, but the satirical innuendos added an unexpected depth. Obviously done on a shoestring, with few proper actors and only slightly more musicans, the lack of polish is vital to its impact. The second offering was a bit more laboured to start with but patience is rewarded with often less than subtle digs at various sacred cows. The 3rd of the concert-how did this marriage happen!-is the equivalent of the Last Night of the Proms crossed with a rowdy gig in a Students Union (when students were revolting, rather than the apolitical mice of today) but no less enjoyable especially in the context of when it happened(The breaking down of the Berlin Wall). You may have guessed than I am not young- Monty Python was new when I was at Uni; So my idea of art, politics and humour may not coincide with yours. However, there is a lot to be enjoyed for those who are not keen on endlessly refined and characterless offerings and would like to take the chance of feeling something raw in the making that makes humour and points without being gratuitous or pretentious about it.If you like the 70s, Spinal Tap, Spike Milligan, brass bands, road movies and have any connection with Eastern Europe you could worse than checking this one out.If you fall outside this zone and are fed up of lousy american feelgood films and daytime television but were strangely attracted by My Generation performed by th Zimmers then, hey why not dare?Read full review
Aki Kaurismaki is a cult hero for me. I used to go to independent cinema theatre every Saturday night in order to see his films. It was the beginning of 1990s. I used to admire the very very pointy shoes of Leningrad Cowboys. Their fashion and lovely manner were really admireable! Kaurismaki's film is very surreal and the existence of the boys is only that to add up the strange atmosphere. You must see it to enjoy the strange world of Kaurismaki! It's very cool.
super
